Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-27-17

Here’s some great news to start the week: The Pitchfork Music Festival returns this summer from July 14-16 at Union Park in Chicago! They’ve just announced three incredible headliners, which are LCD Soundsystem, A Tribe Called Quest and Solange. The rest of the lineup will apparently be announced in the coming weeks. It’s definitely a great start though, and if you want to buy tickets (single day or three day), they’re on sale now. Beyond standard tickets they’re also offering a new Pitchfork +PLUS option, which is basically VIP access throughout the festival grounds, including special food vendors, bars and seating areas (among other things). That’ll cost you $365, versus a standard $175 3-day pass or a $75 single day pass. Anyways, Pitchfork is my absolute favorite music festival to attend every single year, and if you’ve never been I strongly recommend picking up a ticket. More details as they trickle out! Let’s dive into today’s Pick Your Poison, which includes downloads from Cousin Dan, The Head, Secret Science and Seven Day Sleep. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Amber Arcades, Alex Napping, Blanck Mass, Bonny Doon, David Bazan, The Cairo Gang, CLOSENESS, Jay Som, Jenn Grant, Sango, Uppermost and You’ll Never Get to Heaven.

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-23-17

Well this is a delightful edition of Pick Your Poison to wrap up the week. Bleached are back with a new EP, and the song below is one of their best and most addictive to date. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy continues to mine the folk genre for buried treasure, this time quite literally. DJ Premier & Miguel team up for another solid slice of smoothly textured R&B, but filtered with a more electronic flavor. SOFI TUKKER are an up-and-coming electro-funk duo that are worth checking out. And Chicago heroes Twin Peaks have a live album coming out, so you can get a taste of that in this set too. Other tracks come from Fauvely, Jaye Bartell (ft. Angel Olsen), Joakim, Moor Mother (ft. Geng), Odd Couple, Steve Lacy, and The Wooden Sky.

Bleached – Flipside

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – Treasure Map

DJ Premier x Miguel – 2 Lovin U

SOFI TUKKER – Greed

Twin Peaks – Have You Ever? (Live at Thalia Hall)

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 2-22-17

As they say in Ghostbusters, don’t cross the streams. There are some good ones in today’s Pick Your Poison. Kingdom brings some gloriously slinky R&B melodies to match SZA’s effortless delivery. No Joy continue to prove that there’s still plenty of creativity to be wrung from the shoegaze genre. The Octopus Project continues their unique take on experimental electro-rock in the best sort of way, and Sondre Lerche proves that just because a song is about violence doesn’t mean it has to sound like it. Other tracks in this set come from ARY, Emma Jensen, Jamie Isaac (ft. Wiki & Denzel Curry), The Magician & Julian Perretta, Magic Island, Mr. Mitch (ft. P Money) and The Poison Arrows.

Kingdom – What Is Love (ft. SZA)

No Joy – Hellhole

The Octopus Project – Pedro Yang

Sondre Lerche – Violent Game

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-21-17

Oh hey, here’s another Pick Your Poison with downloads! New week, new music. CFM is the ferocious solo project of garage psych guitarist Charles Moothart, who plays an important role in Ty Segall’s band(s). Clark continues the streak of intelligent electronica with a fresh track. Also the new songs from Hater and Her’s are both quite good, hopefully boosting the profiles of both artists. Minus the Bear continue their streak of quality music with another preview of their forthcoming album. Other tracks in this set come from Adam Torres, CFM, Jacquees & Dej Loaf, Raekwon (ft. G-Eazy), Sam Gellaitry, Slugabed, Sono Oto and Tennyson x Mr. Carmack (ft. BJ the Chicago Kid).

And just like that, it’s summer in Chicago. In February. Record-setting temperatures are on the schedule for the next few days, so get outside and enjoy this somewhat brief break from winter! Maybe take along a few of these tracks as your soundtrack? The new Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2 song is pretty solid. If you’re in the mood for something loud and downright objectionable, Pharmakon has that covered in the best possible way. Throw in some solid jazz from Thundercat and an Oasis cover from Yumi Zouma, and this is a great set of music! Don’t miss other songs in this set either from Fujiya & Miyagi, Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge, Kiki (ft. Lykke Li), MIKE, Nightlands, Talaboman and more!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Here’s hoping you find a new track to love in this set of audio streams. Looking for a place to start? I’d recommend checking out Annie Hardy’s (Giant Drag) first new song in several years. That new Hercules & Love Affair cut ft. Faris Badwan from The Horrors is a solid banger too. Really liking the vibes on the SBTRKT remix of Nao’s “Bad Blood” as well. Also in this collection you’ll find tracks from Citris (covering Courtney Barnett), Ecstatic Vision, Gang of Youths, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Kane Strang, Lea Porcelain, Lil Peep & Lil Tracy, The New Year, Pile and Sami.

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-2-17

It’s Groundhog Day, and once again the world’s greatest rodent weather forecaster has revealed that there will be six more weeks of winter. Seems like Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow every year, even when it’s very grey and overcast outside (as it was this year). Considering the fact that it keeps raining in Chicago and there hasn’t been much snow on the ground since December, I’m somewhat inclined to say that spring might be coming sooner than we all think. Or climate change has become more serious than ever. It’s probably the latter, sadly. At least there’s music to help get us through. Don’t miss downloads in this set from 20 Minute Loop, Curse of Lono, Imagist (ft. Lil Government) and Niilo Smeds. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Deep State, Dominowe, Jlin, Mating Ritual, Me Not You, Sherwood & Pinch (ft. Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 1-31-17

So I’m faced with…let’s call it a slight dilemma. If you’re a regular visitor to the site, you may have noticed the Pick Your Poison posts showing up less frequently than usual. That’s less to do with any laziness on my part and more to do with the increasing struggle to find a balanced amount of content. When I say “balanced,” I mean a relatively solid mixture of song downloads and streams. As is the trend, the downloads are becoming much fewer while the streams only increase in number. We’re all essentially moving toward a streaming world anyways, right? The dilemma is whether to continue to hold back some posts for the sake of building up a steady arsenal of downloads to include with the streams, or to just let it all out there as it comes in, even if it’s an entire post of streams. Heavily leaning towards the latter, especially since I’m sitting on about 30 songs you should be able to hear sooner rather than later. For today though, enjoy this “standard” edition of Pick Your Poison, complete with downloads from Beth // James, Boreen, Lao, Matt Pond PA, Mija and Mo Troper. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Cloud Nothings, CUZ (ft. Killer Mike, Damaged Bug, Duch Uncles, Froth, Hater, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Kelly Lee Owens (ft.
