Pick Your Poison: Monday 8-5-13

Ugh. I am wiped out. The sort of wiped out that has you falling asleep at your keyboard in the middle of the day. The sort of wiped out where all you want to do is crawl into bed and sleep for 24 hours straight, foregoing meals or any other possible life responsibility. Music festivals are not exactly kind to the human body, and a majority of my peers tell me that they can’t do the 8-10 hours of standing, dancing and generally rocking out each day for three days that such a festival sometimes requires. I’ve had marathon runners say that they’re comfortable doing a 5 or 10K in a few hours, but wouldn’t dream of attending a music festival full-on for three days because of the toll it takes on your body. And that’s not even taking into account aftershows. Of course maybe I’m being overly dramatic here. I mean, if you look at things like Coachella and Bonnarroo and Lollapalooza and see 100,000 people or so all trying to survive a weekend (though that doesn’t account for arrival times or single day ticket holders), there are plenty who view music festivals as a challenge. That’s certainly how I used to view it. In a year or two I’ll have been hitting the music festivals hard for 10 years straight, and am arguably worse for the wear. I take Mondays after a music festival off from my full time job because I know at this point I’ll need that day to recover. And I’m clearly still not there yet. But I still love it just the same, though I’m not trying to push myself quite so hard anymore. Showing up at 2 p.m. instead of noon seems a-ok with me if I can get some more sleep and general rest. So please excuse me while I take some time to recover from this year’s Lollapalooza. It was a wild one, and I hope you were there to enjoy it with me, or at the very least watched some of it online. I’ll just leave you with this edition of Pick Your Poison. Choice tracks today come from Chad Kichula, Dustin Wong, Forest Fire, iNCH, Nobody Ever, Party Supplies and PJ Harvey. Normally on Thursdays I have This Week in Music, a segment which has me pointing you in the direction of all sorts of fun and interesting music-related things on the Internet that popped up over the last 7 days. Well, given that we’re on the eve of yet another Chicago music festival, I’ve decided to forego that segment for this week to get myself prepared for the tidal wave that is Lollapalooza. I hope you’ll be going this year too, as it sold out almost immediately from music hungry fans. Speaking of which, if you’re not sure who to see this weekend at Lolla, make sure you check out my preview guide for an hour-by-hour dissection of the best bands performing on each of the three days of the festival. It’s gonna be a blast! If you’re not going or are maybe just going to watch the YouTube stream, perhaps a Thursday edition of Pick Your Poison can satisfy some cravings for some new and great music. Hello Tuesday, and by proxy, hello to the new albums being released today. As I like to do every week, let me pass along a list of artists unleashing new music on the unsuspecting public, because this is something you should be aware of even if you haven’t bought an album in a year. That said, look for releases from the following artists this week: Adam Franklin, Alela Diane, Buddy Guy, John Zorn, Michael Franti, and Robin Thicke. That’s it? Well, we are in the sparse release landscape that is summer. Ah well, plenty more things to look forward to in the coming weeks. There’s some delightful tracks from The Basement Tapes, Brother Dege, Friendzone, Ha Ha Tona, Hey Sholay, MK Ultra and WhoaBear. Pick Your Poison: Monday 7-29-13

Monday marks the start of Lollapalooza Week here at Faronheit. This is a tradition that has been going on since somewhere around 2006, though of course due to the loss of the site archives during a move back in 2010 you can really only check out coverage from the last couple years, if that’s something you’re looking for. This year is going to be a great time, if the speed of ticket sales are any indication. I’ve got a million and one things planned for this week already, it’s going to be tough to get a normal amount of writing in. But have no fear, I’ll be doing my best to keep you up-to-date with the bands you should see and the crazy shenanigans happening all over Chicago this upcoming weekend. Anticipate a Spotify playlist(s) with artists on the lineup, a preview guide, daily recaps, and final thoughts with photos. Speaking of which, I should mention that if you’re going to be in town on Thursday night and have nothing to do, the folks at FILTER Magazine are throwing a fun (21+) party at Logan Square Auditorium at the cost of FREE. There will be DJ sets from the team behind the forthcoming comedy The World’s End, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright. Also DJing will be Chris Holmes and Windy City Soul Club. Oh yeah, and live performances too, from Chicago’s own Smith Westerns plus the lovely MNDR. Not only is it free to get in and you get to see a movie plus hear some great music, but all drinks will be on the house as well (which is why it’s 21+). Sounds like a great time, right? RSVP here. Things kick off at 9PM on Thursday night, but you’ll probably want to show up early because entry is first come, first served! Now then, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. Don’t miss tracks from Bad Cello, The Bynars, The Dead Daisies, Friendzone, Hailer, Mucca Pazza and Teengirl Fantasy. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Basement Jaxx, Ditt Inre, Girls Against Boys, Kissaway Trail and Supreme Cuts (ft. Channy from Polica).

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 7-24-13

We’re in the dead heat of music festival season right now in Chicago, and as I shift my focus away from Pitchfork Music Festival and towards the direction of Lollapalooza, I’d like to take a moment to tell you about an exciting event happening next Thursday, August 1st. I don’t know about you, but I’m a pretty big fan of Jessie Ware. Her album Devotion was one of my favorites last year, and I think she’s a future R&B superstar. She’s also performing at the sold out Lollapalooza next weekend. While I’m grateful for music festivals providing a way to see hundreds of bands in a single space over the course of a few days, I do tend to prefer smaller sized performances with artists. It lends a sense of intimacy to things, and you don’t have to deal so much with hot weather and messy crowds. Anyways, the W Hotel on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago is going to be hosting a Lollapalooza pre-party next Thursday featuring an intimate performance by Jessie Ware. You can’t buy tickets to it, and you could well call it a private event, unless you win tickets. Not only that, but you can win a whole prize package that includes a three night stay at the W, two 3-day passes to Lollapalooza, and admittance into the Jessie Ware show on Thursday night. It’s a sweet deal, and you don’t have to sell your firstborn child to enter to win either. Just upload a music-related photo to Instagram before 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 25th and include the hashtag #WMusicINSIDER. Then follow @whotels and @whotelsofchi on Instagram and you’re automatically entered to win. For more details on this contest, go here. Sound good? Now let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s some great tracks today from Body Parts, Cavaliers of Fun, Decoy Jet, Hollis Brown, Paper Lions, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding and Tight Nights. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Claire, Crystal Antlers, Icona Pop, The Lumineers, The Naked and Famous and The Orwells.

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 7-23-13

It’s Tuesday, which means I run down the list of artists releasing new albums this week. The goal is to inform you about the new music and maybe even act as a reminder if you forgot that one of your favorites was coming out with something new. We’re in the doldrums of summer, so the release list is a bit small at the moment, but that doesn’t mean there’s not some quality in here. Pick up copies of albums from any of these artists via your local independent music retailer or online retailer: Admirers, Baroness, Coke Weed, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Eric and Magill, Fialta, Fuck Buttons, Gogol Bordello, Grant Hart, Hunx and His Punx, Kyle Andrews, The Love Language, Smashing Pumpkins (reissue), Sombear, Van Dyke Parks, and Weekend. If it’s individual songs you’re looking for, allow me to point you in the direction of today’s Pick Your Poison. It’s below. There’s some sweet treats in this set from The Band in Heaven, Cavalier King, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, The Grisly Band, Local Natives, M.G. Baker Co., Sleepmakeswaves, TORCHES and Vial of Sound. Pick Your Poison: Monday 7-22-13

Woof. I hope your weekend was fantastic. Mine absolutely was, and if you’ve been following the site and my Twitter feed all weekend I’m sure you got a good idea of the many things that went down at Pitchfork Music Festival. Like previous years, it was a whole lot of fun with a whole lot of great people. If you’ve never been I strongly encourage you to go. Full coverage, including daily recaps of all the bands I saw, is available here. I’m a bit out of it after taking an aggressive approach to each day over the weekend, so I’m going to need today to recover. I’ve still got one final Pitchfork Music Fest report to write, an ending summary along with a million and one photos. It’ll get done…sometime this week. Stay tuned on that. But in the meantime, the music continues and Pick Your Poison continues. Don’t miss tracks today from Art Decade, The Chill Marks, Flashlights, Grooms, Las Kellies and TOTEM. Pick Your Poison: Thursday 7-18-13

At this point in the week I typically put together the Thursday segment I call “This Week In Music,” which features some of my favorite non-mp3 music things for you to read and watch and generally enjoy. Due to the work I’m putting in on Pitchfork Music Festival-related duties right now (it starts tomorrow afternoon!), that segment is going to have to wait until next Thursday. As I continue to mention, you can see all of my Pitchfork Music Fest coverage by following this link, but you can also follow me on Twitter for direct, on-site band-by-band updates from the festival all weekend long. It’s set to be a great time, and I wish they were streaming it online for everyone who can’t go. Alas, not this year. But maybe instead of sitting on your computer all weekend watching bands perform you can download and stream some great new tracks from some great new bands instead. That’s what Pick Your Poison is all about. In today’s edition, don’t miss songs from Alexia Coley, Franskild, Kim Lenz, Migrant Kids, Therese Aune, Toy Soldiers and Yuck. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Elvis Costello & The Roots, Forest Swords, Sarah Neufeld, We Are Scientists and Sally Shapiro’s remix of Young Galaxy.

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 7-17-13

We’ve reached the middle of the week, and while I’d typically spend this intro writing about some music news item or offering some sort of pop culture commentary, during this particular week I’m a bit pressed for time. There’s a lot going on, the most important of those things being preparing for this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival and the week-long coverage I’m working on for that. Sadly, something must suffer as a result, and these intros are that. So, if you click this link, you can view all the Pitchfork Music Fest coverage I’ve written so far, and will continue to write for the next few days. Beyond that, please enjoy the tracks that are part of today’s Pick Your Poison. Recommendations include cuts from Alligator Indian, Breakbot & Irfane, Ducky, Glimmermen, Stout Cortez and Walking Shapes. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new stuff from The Dismemberment Plan, Keep Shelly in Athens, No Age, and the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs remix of Disclosure’s “F For You”.

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 7-16-13

Do people get genuinely excited about Tuesdays anymore? I mean, I do, but I’m not sure how many others do. Considering all the piracy that goes on, with albums and such leaking before their official release dates, has that tempered the excitement? I can see how that might be. For me, it’s about the physicality of holding something in your hands, which means actually buying something from a brick and mortar store (or ordering it online). So some weeks I’ll race to the store on a Tuesday and raid the shelves, dropping more money than I might otherwise like. Still, it’s a great feeling from time to time, and I hope it never dies out or goes away. So let me provide the service I do every Tuesday, which is to list the artists with some new stuff coming out, just to make sure you’re aware of it. Look for fresh releases this week from Court Yard Hounds, David Lynch, Frank Black, Gauntlet Hair, A Grave With No Name, Robert Randolph, Soft Metals, Speedwell (featured below!), White Dove and Yoya. Good stuff, but if none of that inspires you, maybe you’ll discover something new and great in today’s Pick Your Poison. Let me recommend tracks from Autre Ne Veut, BEACH, Diplo, Jake Bellows, Kid Karate and U137. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Army Navy, Barbarossa, Earl Sweatshirt, Pure Bathing Culture and TV Ghost.

Autre Ne Veut – On and On

BEACH – O, Packaging

Clang Boom Steam – Clan

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – If You Didn’t See Mee (Then You Weren’t on the Dancefloor) (AMTRAC Remix)

Diplo – Crown (ft. Mike Posner & Boaz Van De Beatz & Riff Raff)

Jake Bellows – All Right Now

Pick Your Poison: Monday 7-15-13

If you’re the sort of person who just clicked on over to this page and didn’t take a look at the main site, let me do my best to bring you up to speed. It’s Pitchfork Music Festival week here at Faronheit. This happens for a full week every year, and it’s a lot of fun even if you’re not attending the festival itself, which takes place this weekend, July 19-21. Have a look at the official site for details on the lineup and set times and a few other key items like ticket prices if you’re so inclined. But say you don’t live in Chicago and can’t afford to make the trip. The good news is the festival will be streamng all weekend long. I can’t tell you exactly where that will be streaming just yet, but you can sort of live vicariously through your computer screen all weekend if you so choose. One of my absolute favorite things about the Pitchfork Music Festival is its lineup. It’s a boutique festival so with only three stages and limited resources it’s a much more friendly and down-to-earth vibe all weekend with good people and not a lot of corporate signage. The lineup largely matches that perspective, with not a lot of big names you’ve heard of unless you’re really deeply into music, and part of the fun is discovering new acts. Well, you don’t need to go too far to find out more about any of them. On this first day of Pitchfork Music Festival Week, I’ve put together a comprehensive Artist Guide to help you learn about and hear music from all the artists on the lineup this year. I’ll have day-by-day previews, along with day-by-day recaps in the coming days as well. So I hope you’ll check some of that stuff out beyond just another edition of Pick Your Poison. Now then, about that. Today’s noteworthy tracks come from Dim Peaks, Jack Wilson, The Mother Hips, Qurious, Shelby Earl, Therese Aune and Chicago’s own Wedding Dress. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Caged Animals, Dan Croll, Editors, Jackson Scott and Smallpools.

Fialta – Cars

Pitchfork Music Festival 2013: Artist Guide

Welcome to Pitchfork Music Festival Week! For the next seven days, you can count on more coverage of the 2013 Pitchfork Music Festival on this site than you can shake a stick at. What does “shake a stick at” mean and how does it apply in this context? It doesn’t matter! Just go with the flow. Anyways, as a grand introduction to this whole week’s worth of coverage, I wanted to help you get fully acquainted with all of the artists performing at this year’s festival. There’s somewhere around 45 or so (I’m too lazy to count), and depending on your tastes there’s a chance you might fall in love with all of them. Of course you’ll never know unless you listen to all of their music and judge for yourself. With that in mind, click past the jump to see a listing for every artist on the lineup, complete with links to their websites, songs you can stream on Soundcloud or Spotify (depending on your preference), and in some cases mp3s or full album/mixtape downloads. It’s quite comprehensive, and I hope you’ll discover something new and great as a result. The listings are ordered by day and (technically) set time, though I haven’t listed the set times here. Additionally, if you’d like to find almost every artist put together in a handy playlist that’s organized by genre (for flow purposes), look no further than this Spotify mix that I put together. Check back tomorrorw for the start of the day-by-day preview guide, where I’ll suggest what bands to see each hour of each day. And I promise that WILL include set times.
