Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-22-18

It may be odd, but apparently Car Seat Headrest and Smash Mouth have some level of mutual respect for one another. As a sign of that respect, they’ve decided to cover one another’s songs for some reason. You can hear Car Seat Headrest’s version of Smash Mouth’s “Fallen Horses” below. It’s interesting, to say the least! Also in the highlights for today, get ethereal with something new from Julianna Barwick, and discover some great new hip hop from SOB x RBE. There’s even more music after the jump, including tracks from Bishat, Branko + PEDRO, Caroline Says, Dillon Francis (ft. Fuego), Ganser, Launder, Lea Love, Oklou, and PREP.

Car Seat Headrest – Fallen Horses (Smash Mouth cover)

Julianna Barwick – Garland

SOB x RBE – Anti Social

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-20-18

It’s a particularly fun edition of Pick Your Poison today, for no other reason than the songs are just a little wilder than usual. If you venture past the jump however, you’ll find additional songs to stream from Frokedal, Grandtheft (ft. Just Chase), Gundelach, Iskwe (ft. Tanya Tagaq), Shanahan (ft. Arielle), SWOLL, VOWWS, Win and Woo, and Yumi (ft. Olmos).

Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-19-18

Normally on a Monday I’d have about double the amount of downloads for you to enjoy, but unfortunately the numbers just aren’t quite there this week. Ah well. You can still pick up some great tracks from the likes of Errant Boy, Luna Shadows, and Red Black Red. The Soundcloud section after the jump has you covered with some streams from Alison Wonderland, August Greene, Bonny Doon, Chez Ali, Esbie Fonte, Gift Wrap, Helena Deland, Holly Miranda, Jouska, Simone Felice, Steve Kroeger, and Vera.

Cloud – Wildfire

DREAMDOG – RIBBONHANDS

Luna Shadows – Youth (Quiet)

Red Black Red – The Scientist

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 2-14-18

Happy Valentine’s Day! Hope you get to spend some time with somebody you love – even if it’s just family or friends. There are a couple of love-centric songs in today’s edition of Pick Your Poison, but it’s not specifically angled in that direction. Most of these songs are rather lovely in their own ways though, especially highlights from The Blow, The California Honeydrops, and Eleanor Friedberger. Keep going past the jump and stream additional tracks from BRKLYN (ft. Lenachka), Frank Leone, JB Dunckel (of Air), Paddy Hanna, Rival Consoles, Roxiny, Westerman, and more!

The Blow – Afterparty

The California Honeydrops – Call It Home

Eleanor Friedberger – In Between Stars

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-13-18

One of my favorite things about these regular editions of Pick Your Poison is the ability to share new and interesting music from local Chicago artists. Chicago has a vibrant music scene filled with all different types, as evidenced here with the rock n’ roll of Company of Thieves and the hip hop of Towkio (ft. Teddy Jackson & Grace Weber). Beyond that, I’d also like to endorse the new one from Kero Kero Bonito, which is a bit weird yet super catchy. After the jump you’ll find more tracks to stream, including ones from Bad Royale (ft. Richie Loop), BAUM, Black Atlass, GRDNS, Hoodlem, Millionyoung, Prinze George, SAINt JHN, and UPSAHL.

Company of Thieves – Window

Kero Kero Bonito – Only Acting

Towkio – 2 Da Moon (ft. Teddy Jackson & Grace Weber)

Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-12-18

The start of a new week means an extended version of Pick Your Poison, complete with downloads from great artists like Mahdyar, Monster Rally, Reighning Days, and Youth Man. Cedar Miller), Marian Hill, Rainbrother, Screaming Females (covering Annie Lennox), Shakey Graves, ToBy, and Totally Mild. Good stuff!

Break out of your mid-week funk with a bunch of new tracks courtesy of Pick Your Poison. There’s fresh stuff in this set from Pale Kids, PJ Harvey & Harry Escott (contributing to a film soundtrack), and True Blue (Maya Laner of Porches). Head past the jump for more songs from the likes of Air Waves, Branko & PEDRO, The fin., Freedom Baby, Kraus, Night Slugs, Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench, Vundabar, and Yuzima.

True Blue – Tell Me Texas

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-6-18

Chicago is getting pounded with snow this week, which is kind of par for the course in February, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. The tracks in today’s Pick Your Poison made me feel a little less hopeless, so I hope they have the same effect on you. There’s a new one from Bardo Pond, a special Black History Month track from Blood Orange, and a gorgeous shoegazey number from Holy Motors, all of which I hope grab your interest. Follow along beyond the jump for more songs from the likes of 3LAU (ft. Nevve), Badrapper & NXSTY, Dark Dark Horse, Fine China, Hatis Noit, Nova Moura, SOB x RBE, Stevie Wolf, and a Tee Grizzley remix (ft. Meek Mill).

Bardo Pond – Inner Light

Blood Orange – Christopher & 6th

Holy Motors – Signs

Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-5-18

Normally on Mondays I’d have an extended edition of Pick Your Poison to get your week started right. That typically includes several downloads. This week I don’t have enough mp3s to make that possible, so a collection of only Soundcloud streams will have to do instead. The diverse highlights today come from the likes of Chappo, GoGo Penguin, and Julia Holter. Always happy to hear new stuff from all three of those artists. Head past the jump, and you’ll discover more songs from Balkan Bump (ft. Talib Kweli), Becky and the Birds, Downlowd, Hibou, Lauren Auder, Lean Chihiro, Strange Names (ft. Jorge Socarras), $uicideboy$, and Yoste.

Chappo – White Noise

GoGo Penguin – Window

Julia Holter – So Humble The Afternoon

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-1-18

Welcome to February, where we’re just a day away from finding out whether or not we’ll have six more weeks of winter. Yes, the ever-elusive groundhog known as Punxatawney Phil will attempt to see his own shadow tomorrow morning, in a tradition so goofy and unscientific that I hold the Bill Murray film about the date in higher esteem. Still, if past experience holds true, we’ll once again be told that winter will stick around a little longer than usual. How about some great tunes to help pass the time? Pick Your Poison has you covered, as always. There’s a new solo album from The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. on the way, so you can hear something from that in the highlights below. Also noteworthy is a fun cover of a Nada Surf song by the one and only Charly Bliss. Make sure to give that new Cold Fronts song a shot as well. Keep going beyond the jump if you’re at all interested in hearing tracks from Bryde, Fanshore & Tropic, JD. Reid (ft. Bossman Birdie & Ghetts), King Shelter, Kyle Rapps, Malena Zavala, Mija, Onra, and Sky Keller.

Albert Hammond Jr. – Muted Beatings

Charly Bliss – The Way You Wear Your Head (Nada Surf cover)

Cold Fronts – Staying In

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 1-30-18

Let’s skip straight to the details with today’s Pick Your Poison. The three lovely tracks up top come from AVEC, Local Natives, and White Cliffs (ft. Ricky James). All of them are well worth your time, so I hope you listen and enjoy. Of course there’s plenty more for discerning tastes beyond the jump, including songs from Blair Sound Design, Blanco White James, Cooper Saver’s remix of a Cut Copy track, HYLLS, Kindo, Llovers, Oliver Hazard, Soft As Snow, and Will Long.

AVEC – Youth

Local Natives – Colombia (Demo)

White Cliffs – Heart Start (ft. Ricky James)

Pick Your Poison: Monday 1-29-18

Hope you had a fantastic weekend, and managed to stay warm in this winter weather. It’s been a good start to the year so far from a music perspective, and today’s Pick Your Poison continues to help prove that point. There are some great downloads in this set from Fawns of Love, Max Koffler & Seoulmates, Moon Darling, and Peelander-Z. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Bobby Nourmand (ft. Laurent John), Crymynals (ft. Fatherdude), Cuco, Daze (ft. Fanny), Elohim, Hatchback, Jordan Lomeli, Launder, Lord Huron, MATTIS, Xie, and Young & Sick.

Fawns of Love – Zine Days

Oddnote – Money Comes, Money Goes

Peelander-Z – Yeah Yeah Yeah

Shmu – Hololeaps

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 1-24-18

By sheer coincidence, my favorite three tracks in today’s Pick Your Poison are all associated with artists that have nature associations in their names. The Field is obviously an open patch of grass, Garden City Movement has homegrown vegetables in the first part of their name, and Palm is a type of tree. That says absolutely nothing about the music itself, it’s just a weird word association exercise for fun. But yeah, the songs themselves are great and you should check them out. Head beyond the jump, and there’s even more great music to digest, including songs from Dabrye (ft. DOOM), Dear Boy, DJ Koze, The Garden (another nature connection!), George FitzGerald, Keys N Krates (ft. 070 Shake), Team Picture, Triathalon, and TSVI.

The Field – Staircase

Garden City Movement – Foreign Affair

Palm – Composite

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 1-23-18

Have you ever woken up in the morning with a slightly scratchy throat, chalked it up to sleeping in a weird position or snoring, only to have your sinuses go haywire several hours later? Yeah, apparently I’ve come down with a cold. It’s the third cold I’ve had in six months, with a fun additional detour through flu country as well. The point being, it’s not fun, and apparently I need to take better care of myself. My advice to you for staying healthy? Get enough sleep. And vitamins. And try to minimize the amount of junk food you eat. Hopefully that’s a reasonable recipe for avoiding getting sick. Oh, and wash your hands! But that one should be a no-brainer. Also a no-brainer? Today’s Pick Your Poison. Good stuff in this set, especially from Birocratic, Dead Meadow, and EDEN. If you’ll continue onward past the jump, you’ll also be treated to tracks from AMERA (covering The Cranberries aka RIP Dolores O’Riordan), AVIVA, Gundelach, Kasbo (ft. Tender), Major Murphy, Pinky Pinky, Russ, Ukiyo (ft. FEELDS), and more!

Birocratic – Extra Fresh

Dead Meadow – Keep Your Head

EDEN – love; not wrong (brave)
