Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 6-4-14

Hey everybody! So I’m about to take a few days of much-needed vacation, in which I’ll be flying out to Houston for some fun in the sun and delicious BBQ. I’m a big fan of Texas in general, and while Austin is my preferred city, Houston is pretty cool too. So anyways, be aware that the site will move along at its normal pace while I’m away, though if you send me an email that requires a reply it may take me a few days. The only thing that gets cut short as a result of this vacation is this Pick Your Poison intro, which I don’t have time to write in the way I would like. My apologies there. I’ll be back on Monday, at which time I’ll be playing catch-up. Should be fun. Anyways, good tracks in today’s Pick Your Poison set come from Banana Beach, Gracy Hopkins, Manicanparty, Mat Zo (ft. Pick Your Poison: Monday 6-2-14

One of the most amusingly random and weird music news stories to emerge this calendar year has got to be the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar as a touring musical. That in and of itself isn’t so much random and weird, as it’s been a longtime favorite and classic production from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The random and weird part is the casting, which has such a WTF factor that I spit out a portion of my drink when I saw who was lined up to play key roles. Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child fame was Mary Magdalene. JC Chasez of ‘N Sync was Pontius Pilate. Both of those make some degree of sense, given their lack of other work these days. It seems natural they would gravitate towards musical theatre. But then it gets stranger. Brandon Boyd of Incubus gets the role of Judas Iscariot. Sure, the guy looks the part, but is Incubus not doing well right now? Last I checked they were still pretty popular and continuing the cycle of album, tour, album, tour. Last but certainly not least, there’s John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten from The Sex Pistols/Public Image Ltd as King Herod. If you don’t find that casting bizarre, go back and explore the man’s catalogue. Now if all this sounds like a random and strange good time, I’m inclined to agree with you, though I’d never fork over more than about five bucks to see the results. Apparently a lot of other people felt that way too, because they’ve now cancelled the entire 54 city tour just days before it was set to launch, not citing poor ticket sales but one might assume that’s the primary reason. Producers saw they were going to lose a lot of money and decided to pull the plug while they still had the chance. So tragically we’ll never find out how much of a mistake this could have been. Of course, we did get a little video preview the other day courtesy of Good Morning America, where Brandon Boyd and Michelle Williams performed a song from the famed musical. At the very least, we’ll always have that. Now then, how about today’s Pick Your Poison? Good stuff in this set comes from Canopies, Collarbones, Emma Garrett, Slow Dancing Society, We Are Temporary and Young Braves. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from The Cold and Lovely, Liam Bailey, A Million Billion Dying Suns, White Reaper and Wonderful Humans.

Let’s start with the basics. Macaulay Culkin has a band. If you’re like, “Who is Macaulay Culkin?” the best I can give you is he’s that kid from the Home Alone movies. If you’re like, “What Home Alone movies?” I can’t help you any further. But for those of us fully aware of Culkin’s past and present, he’s now part of a band known as The Pizza Underground. They specialize in taking songs from The Velvet Underground’s catalogue, and covering them with the lyrics changed to include references to pizza. Songs include “Take A Bite of the Wild Slice,” “I’m Waiting for Delivery Man” and “All the Pizza Parties.” You can watch this 15 minute video about the band if you’re interested in learning more. As a result of this, the band began to receive offers to play shows around the world. Last weekend they performed as part of the Dot to Dot Festival in England, and their set at the Nottingham stop did not go well. The Nottingham Post reports that after one song, people started booing and then began pelting the band with beer. As the antagonism got worse, the band decided they’d had enough after about 15 minutes and ended their set. Reviews were understandably not kind. Apparently things went a bit better at the Bristol stop of the festival, as this video shows. As someone who fully intends to see The Pizza Underground perform at Riot Fest this September, this is equal parts interesting and disheartening. Provided they’re still a fully functional band by then, it will be amusing to see if they evolve these next few months and whether or not a Chicago crowd will show them respect enough for them to play a full set. Whatever the outcome, the entertainment value will hopefully be off the charts. So let’s shift focus to the entertainment that is your mid-week Pick Your Poison. There’s some good tracks today from The Citrus Clouds, City Tribe, Lexie Roth, Lower, Mano’s Daughter, What Moon Things and The Wonder Revolution. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Anand Wilder and Maxwell Kardon, Bishop Allen, Jaded Inc., Priests, A Sunny Day in Glasgow and Tiny Victories.

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 5-21-14

Jack White is a genius, at least in the musical sense. There are few people who would claim otherwise, I think, and while his work with The White Stripes could be considered his most prolific, his talent remains fully on display in side projects like The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, but also his latest solo efforts. Beyond being an incredible guitarist and (less so) songwriter, White runs his own record label and is a key figure in the revival and innovation of vinyl records as of late. His accomplishments aren’t really up for debate. Where things start getting sketchy are when you begin to take a closer look at the man behind them. I don’t want to dive into this too much, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that music things aside, he’s kind of an asshole and maybe just a bit of a sexist. “That’s not even remotely true!” you may claim, but this isn’t just some unsubstantiated claim. Let’s go back 11 years to Detroit, where White beat up Von Bondies frontman Jason Stollsteimer. At the time, he plead guilty to assault and battery, paid a fine and went to anger management classes. You could say they did the trick, since he hasn’t beaten anyone up in the last decade (that we know of).

Yet that also hasn’t stopped him from picking verbal fights with people. While his marriage and divorce from Meg White didn’t affect their working relationship in the least (they made music for 7 years afterward with no apparent issues), the same can’t be said for his marriage and divorce from Karen Elson. At first, all seemed well, as the two held a “divorce party” together, celebrating the end of their six year union. But a couple years after that, Elson took out a restraining order against White, barring him from contacting her unless it related to parenting time with their kids. White issued a counter-claim to clarify that the restraining order does not mean he was violent towards his wife and children. As things turned nasty with that divorce and custody battle, emails leaked out that featured White raging against The Black Keys – specifically Dan Auerbach. Apparently their kids go to the same school, and White was none too pleased about having to deal with Auerbach on a regular basis. His main issue seems to be thinking that The Black Keys are riding his coattails and imitating his style in order to gain fame and press. To their credit, The Black Keys held off on giving a real response until earlier this week, when Auerbach said, “I don’t know him” and Patrick Carney said, “(he) obviously sounds like an asshole.”

Then circling back around to Meg, earlier today White talked to Rolling Stone about her, and claimed she’s a “hermit” and extremely emotionally reserved. “She’s one of those people who won’t high-five me when I get the touchdown,” he said. Yet he also compliments her drumming and how well they worked together. Does he have a “women problem,” as a 2012 article in The Atlantic claims? He actually talks about that very issue in the same new Rolling Stone interview, and somehow manages to make a case both for and against that idea.

Personally, it’s probably best to simply judge any artist by the quality of the work he or she makes and nothing else. If we’re able to separate the actual art from the artist behind it, life gets a lot easier. I mean, just look at Kanye West, who is an extreme case if there ever was one. The man behaves like he’s the be-all, end-all of superstars, and gets angry at anyone who doesn’t worship at his feet. It would be a whole lot easier to dismiss him if the music he made wasn’t so incredible. Maybe if you’re brilliant, you have the right to and can get away with being an asshole and/or a sexist. Just because you can get away with it doesn’t mean you should go for it though. So I wish Jack white the best of luck, and hope that his upcoming album Lazaretto is another great piece of music. It’d just be nice if he lightened up from time to time. Okay, let’s dive into today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s some good tracks in this set from Ace Reporter (covering St. Vincent), Circulatory System, Hailer, Joanna Weaver, The Lovely Eggs and Vire. Pick Your Poison: Monday 5-19-14

A couple of weeks ago on Twitter, I put out the call for suggestions on some shows happening in Chicago that I should go and see. My personal concert calendar has been looking pretty empty as of late, following a spring where I’d attend what seemed like 2-3 shows per week. The drop off from that to no concerts for 3-4 weeks is suddenly staggering, so like a junkie I went in search of something, anything to give me sustenance. The next big show on my radar? Eagulls at Beat Kitchen on June 10th. If you haven’t heard Eagulls’ self-titled debut album yet, what are you waiting for? This four piece band from Leeds makes some incredible post-punk that’s rooted in the late 70’s/early 80’s with artists like Misfits and Killing Joke. You could say their more contemporary counterparts are Iceage and Cloud Nothings, which certainly isn’t bad company to be in by any means. Yet that Eagulls record feels remarkably fresh and unique to me, the mark of a band that’s passionate about the music they’re making, and hungry for success. If I had heard more from them by the start of the year, it’s likely I would have placed them into my Class of 2014 with the other artists I’m expecting big things from. Instead, I’ll just praise them whenever I have the chance. Check out singles like “Possessed” and “Nerve Endings” to better understand what Eagulls are going for and why it’s so strangely compelling. Hopefully the songs translate to a rowdy live show as well, which in turn will convert even more people. This will be their first official U.S. tour coming up, so I hope you’ll join me in giving this band the sort of push they deserve. The Chicago show at Beat Kitchen on June 10th is 17+, and tickets are only $12 in advance. You can buy them here. Alright, now let’s talk this week-starting edition of Pick Your Poison. Don’t miss songs today from Balue, City Tribe, Conveyor, Damn Right, Nomadic Firs and Walking Bicycles. Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 5-14-14

When you really think about it, Chicago is incredibly blessed when it comes to music festivals. It’s the third largest city in the country, but first when it comes to fests. L.A. doesn’t really have a major festival unless you count Coachella which is out in the desert a couple hours away. New York has things like Governor’s Ball and The Roots Picnic, but they’re not necessarily massive spectacles. The city has plenty of shows, most are just spread out all over the place instead of concentrated at a big festival. And while other major cities like Seattle, San Francisco and Austin all have multiple music festivals, none are quite the collection that Chicago has, which includes Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, Wavefront, and North Coast, just to name a few. But the one I really want to talk about right now is Riot Fest & Carnival. They just announced a majority of their lineup, and suddenly have established themselves as a major player in the music festival world. This marks the 10th anniversary of Riot Fest, and I guess they wanted to pull out all the stops. Originally started as a punk rock festival in line with the Warped Tour (minus the tour part), the last couple of years they’ve moved away from that theme a bit to incorporate different types of bands, ideally to bring in a greater collection of people. Last year they orchestrated a big “get” in having The Replacements headline in what were their first reunion shows (and pretty much the only ones they did in 2013 I think). That, plus bands like The Dismemberment Plan and Pixies were enough to get me out to Humboldt Park for a day that was a little rainy but also delightful. This year I’m automatically in for all three days thanks to a stacked bill that includes The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, The National, Rise Against, Weezer, The Flaming Lips, Slayer, The Offspring, Wu-Tang Clan, Samhain, Descendents, Tegan and Sara, Metric, Cheap Trick, Patti Smith, Mastodon, Afghan Whigs, Pussy Riot, Superchunk, Naked Raygun, Failure, The Dandy Warhols, Andrew W.K., Kurt Vile, The Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, Hot Snakes, Thurston Moore, The Pizza Underground, The Hotelier and a whole lot more. There’s plenty I want to see, and you should come out September 12-14 if you can make it. Three day passes are on sale now and can be purchased here. There are also smaller Riot Fests in Denver and Toronto during different weekends in September if you’d prefer, but Chicago is the big one. It might be my favorite festival lineup for 2014, though Pitchfork is fighting hard for that honor, as it does every year. Okay, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. Good tracks in this set come from Champagne Jerry (ft. Kathleen Hanna), Flagship, Fur Cough, The Landing, Malibu Shark Attack and TOTEM. Pick Your Poison: Monday 5-12-14

“Oh Morrissey, when will you ever learn?” is probably a phrase that’s been said far too often over the many years he’s been making music. The man is a living legend, responsible for some incredible records with The Smiths and some pretty good ones on his own, and perhaps because of that it’s allowed him to be an unrepentant asshole. It seems like he is almost always involved in some sort of controversy, like it’s something he thrives on. I heard a rock star tell a story once about how his band got kicked off of a tour opening for Morrissey because he deemed them “too boring.” If you’re spending time with the guy and are unable to keep him amused, look out I guess. But if he’s not tossing people aside, he’s doing things like writing an autobiography that was almost never published because he got into a fight with his publisher. Seems he wanted the booked to be part of the “Penguin Classics” series, which is a label reserved for only the most important of novels. In the end he got his way, as that’s something I’m sure he’s very much used to by now. Hence this latest incident, in which Moz was playing a show at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA the same venue where a show with PAWS and We Are Scientists was set to happen at the Constellation Room nearby. Per reports from the PAWS and We Are Scientists camps, Morrissey felt that other bands performing close by might disrupt or cause sound bleed into his set, and was none too pleased about it. The venue first offered to pay PAWS double their fee to drop off the bill so their opening set with We Are Scientists wouldn’t overlap with Morrissey’s show. As they didn’t like the idea of being paid NOT to play and didn’t want to disappoint their fans, they chose to play anyways. The venue got worried this might cause Morrissey to cancel outright, and pushed back the start time of the PAWS/WAS show to ensure there wouldn’t be a conflict. Apparently that wasn’t good enough for Moz’s management however, and someone from his camp demanded that PAWS apologize for essentially refusing a buyout of their set. Apparently things got heated and Morrissey’s manager started screaming at the band (according to them). In the end, all three bands performed, though the PAWS/WAS show was delayed until after Morrissey had finished. We Are Scientists put together some hilarious tweets making fun of Moz after the show, as one might be inspired to do when dealing with somebody known for temper tantrums and getting his way. Naturally, once everything was said and done, Morrissey’s camp denied any problems took place and claimed that he was perfectly fine with the two other bands performing as long as there was no sound bleed. While I believe that the PAWS/WAS account of things was correct, I also kind of believe that Morrissey himself had little to nothing to do with any of it, and that his management team was acting on his behalf. Moz may have offhandedly said something like, “I hope we won’t have any sound bleed from the venue across the way tonight,” and his people then flipped out and tried in overzealous fashion to eliminate any potential problems. That’s their job, though they could have at least been polite about it, particularly with the whole “demanding an apology” part. Needless to say, I don’t think either PAWS or We Are Scientists will be joining Morrissey on tour any time soon, or ever for that matter. Now then, let’s talk about something significantly less controversial, which is the Monday edition of Pick Your Poison.
