Let’s start with the basics. Macaulay Culkin has a band. If you’re like, “Who is Macaulay Culkin?” the best I can give you is he’s that kid from the Home Alone movies. If you’re like, “What Home Alone movies?” I can’t help you any further. But for those of us fully aware of Culkin’s past and present, he’s now part of a band known as The Pizza Underground. They specialize in taking songs from The Velvet Underground’s catalogue, and covering them with the lyrics changed to include references to pizza. Songs include “Take A Bite of the Wild Slice,” “I’m Waiting for Delivery Man” and “All the Pizza Parties.” You can watch this 15 minute video about the band if you’re interested in learning more. As a result of this, the band began to receive offers to play shows around the world. Last weekend they performed as part of the Dot to Dot Festival in England, and their set at the Nottingham stop did not go well. The Nottingham Post reports that after one song, people started booing and then began pelting the band with beer. As the antagonism got worse, the band decided they’d had enough after about 15 minutes and ended their set. Reviews were understandably not kind. Apparently things went a bit better at the Bristol stop of the festival, as this video shows. As someone who fully intends to see The Pizza Underground perform at Riot Fest this September, this is equal parts interesting and disheartening. Provided they’re still a fully functional band by then, it will be amusing to see if they evolve these next few months and whether or not a Chicago crowd will show them respect enough for them to play a full set. Whatever the outcome, the entertainment value will hopefully be off the charts. So let’s shift focus to the entertainment that is your mid-week Pick Your Poison.
