Pick Your Poison: Thursday 3-7-19

Ladies and gentlemen, I come bearing good news! The lineup for the 2019 Pitchfork Music Festival has been announced! This year’s festival takes place from July 19-21 at Union Park in Chicago. Headliners are HAIM, The Isley Brothers (celebrating their 60th anniversary), and Robyn. Other notable names appearing at the fest include Mavis Staples, Belle & Sebastian, Stereolab, Earl Sweatshirt, Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, Pusha T, Kurt Vile, Rico Nasty, Whitney, Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Low, Parquet Courts, Black Midi, and many more! Check out the full lineup, day-by-day breakdown, and buy tickets at PitchforkMusicFestival.com. It’s $175 for a standard 3-day pass, $75 for a standard single day, with a special PLUS tier that will run you $375 for a 3-day and $160 for a single day ticket. Yes, you should go! The music is great and so are the people. Cannot recommend it enough.

Some other things I can’t recommend enough? Tracks in today’s edition of Pick Your Poison. My feelings on Marshmello are mixed at best, but his collaboration with CHVRCHES is much more enjoyable than I anticipated. Similarly, Meg Myers may be a solid singer and songwriter, but I wouldn’t necessarily trust her to do justice to the Kate Bush classic “Running Up That Hill.” Yet Myers nails it on a level that many others have tried and failed in the past. Plus, there’s a new song from Patio and I just really like that band. Skate past the jump for even more music from Baker Grace, Claude Fontaine, E.Parker, Gemma, Greys, Paige Stark, Paris Youth Foundation, Shadient, and Chicago’s own Walking Bicycles.

Marshmello – Here With Me (ft. CHVRCHES)

Meg Myers – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush cover)

Patio – New Reality

Pick Your Poison: Monday 3-4-19

Can we still call Andrew Bird a Chicagoan? He was born in the area and lived in the city for most of his life, but he’s also been calling Los Angeles home for the last several years. Born and raised has to count for something. If that’s the case, then all of the artists in today’s Pick Your Poison highlights have deep Chicago roots. That includes Andrew Bird of course, but also local groups Dehd and FACS (ex-Disappears). Cruise on past the jump to hear more music from less local Chicago artists, like J.PERIOD (ft. Dead Prez, Sa-Roc, & Maimouna Youssef), Kornel Kovacs, Nick Murphy (fka Chet Faker), Oberst & Buchner, Ohtis, Qasim Naqvi, Snow Ghosts, Trace Mountains, and Young & Sick.

Andrew Bird – Manifest

Dehd – Lucky

FACS – Total History

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-28-19

Couldn’t be more thrilled that we’re finally wrapping up February. It’s been a long, cold month despite only being 28 days, and here’s hoping March holds some better, nicer things just in general. At least Pick Your Poison manages to stay consistent. It’s great to hear something from Rooney again, who have been on a bit of a break lately. A new one from Sam Evian comes with sincere thoughts of spring, which as I’ve already mentioned, is just around the corner. Plus, We Are Scientists and Art Brut team up to cover a Traveling Wilburys classic. Keep going past the jump and hear more songs from Alec King (ft. Rich The Kid), BANNERS, Bryce Vine (ft. YG), Burna Boy, Luvia, Noah Kahan, Pvrx (ft. Dave East), TOKiMONSTA (ft. Ambre), and Zero.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Wishing you plenty of love and happiness whether you’re single or in a relationship. I’ll be spending my evening at a Sharon Van Etten show, which promises to be a lovely time. While not every song in today’s Pick Your Poison is related to love, Tourist’s “Love Theme” fits the bill with a great guest spot from Shura. If you’re feeling blue today, SG Lewis can relate, plus Teen Daze seek to brighten your day with “Endless Light”. Keep going past the jump for more songs from Cubbi, Dennis Lloyd, John Paul White, love-sadKiD, NETSKY (ft. Bazzi & Lil Wayne), Pecas, Red Mass, Saycyl & h2the, and ShadowHood.

All extremely talented artists worth your time. But also maybe don’t limit yourself to just those three songs, and move beyond the jump for more music from blackbear, COG, Daniel Thorne, Light Conductor, Orla Gartland, Pregnant Women, Reggie Got Beats & Vebjørn Mamen, Rudy De Anda & Hanni El Khatib, and YK Osiris.

Part of me really wanted to start today’s Pick Your Poison by saying that everything was coming up roses. Of course I’m talking about Anna Rose and Rosie Tucker, who are both right at the top of the highlights. After the jump there’s also a song from Esther Rose, so the thematic connection makes perfect sense. But also I’m recommending that you check out the new one from Chicago’s own Walking Bicycles. Need even more music? How about tracks from Dan D’Lion, Dijon, Mitchell Yard, RL Grime & Graves, Seafret, Softcore Untd., ViVii, and Wy.

Anna Rose – Nobody Knows I’m Here

Rosie Tucker – Habit

Walking Bicycles – Fat Cat

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-5-19

In addition to the Super Bowl, Groundhog Day was also last weekend. Traditionally the groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter, but this year we’ve been promised an early spring. Of course putting our collective faith in a rodent to predict the weather feels like a fool’s errand. It’s just nice to keep the hope alive for warmer temperatures and flowers blooming. Maybe the tracks in today’s Pick Your Poison will help put you in a springtime frame of mind, especially as those of us in Chicago continue in a deep freeze. Don’t miss new ones from Bayonne, Justus Proffit, and Patio to kick things off right up top. You’ll find even more after the jump, including songs from Augustine, Bear Grillz (ft. RUNN), Deorro, Far Caspian, Kendoll, Maria Somerville, NO WIN, Prince Fox, and Zsela.

Bayonne – Same (Edit)

Justus Proffit – Hole

Patio – Boy Scout

Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-4-19

So the Super Bowl happened yesterday, and while I won’t comment on the game itself or even Maroon 5’s halftime performance, I will bring up Big Boi’s guest appearance as he unleashed two new songs over the weekend in help promote it. One of those tracks is featured below, complete with guest spots from Killer Mike and Backbone. Also worth your time to check out are new songs from Olivia O’Brien and Quinn XCII. You’ll find even more after the jump, including tracks from Chantel Jeffries (ft. YG, Rich the Kid, & BIA), EXES x JOME, Galantis (ft. OneRepublic), Gunna, Hazey Eyes (ft. Moli), Murlo, Shook Twins (ft. Gregory Alan Isakov), Uffie, and Young Franco (ft. Reva Devito & Golden Vessel).

Big Boi – Return of the Dope Boi (ft. Killer Mike & Backbone)

Olivia O’Brien – Love Myself

Quinn XCII – Life Must Go On

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 1-31-19

If you’re not yet sold on the talents of Billie Eilish yet, perhaps her latest single will be the thing that pushes you over the edge in the right direction. Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed with her live show at Lollapalooza last August, as it seemed like she didn’t want to be there, but thinking about it further that might just be her aesthetic. Other highlights in today’s Pick Your Poison come from Beach Slang and Perfume Genius (who does an AMAZING cover of an Empress Of song). Ride on past the jump for more music from Aaron May, Alice Crow Buckly, Baby FuzZ, Ben Hayes, Cautious Clay, DJ Plead, Isaac Dunbar, Shlohmo, and Tim Atlas.

Beach Slang – I Hate Alternative Rock

Billie Eilish – bury a friend

Perfume Genius – When I’m With Him (Empress Of cover)
