Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 4-9-19

Today’s edition of Pick Your Poison can best be described as…interesting. Not sure how many names you’ll recognize in this set, but in some ways that’s kind of the point. Hopefully you check out some new artists or songs that were otherwise unfamiliar to you, while occasionally spotting an artist you already know and love mixed in. Of course you make your own choices, which is why the segment has the word “pick” in it. Some highlights here come from The Babe Rainbow, Chloe Foy, and Little Pale x The Gardener doing their best when covering a Stone Roses classic. Elsewhere after the jump, stream songs from Bear Grillz (ft. Micah Martin), Butcher & the Florist, Heir, Merival, Montoya, SACRE, The Skinks (ft. Protoje), Thin Year, and Yung Gravy.

The Babe Rainbow – Morning Song

Chloe Foy – Oh You Are Not Well

Little Pale x The Gardener – I Wanna Be Adored (The Stone Roses cover)

Show Review: Avey Tare [Co-Prosperity Sphere; Chicago; 4/6/19]

One of the things I admire most about Avey Tare (Dave Portner) is his lack of complacency. At no point in his solo work or as a member of Animal Collective has he adhered to expectation or perceived boundaries, and that wild card nature has often resulted in brilliance (with the occasional misstep). You’re never quite sure where he’ll evolve to next, but can rest assured it will never be boring.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 4-8-19

Welcome back to Hot Chip! It’s been a minute (four years) since they’ve released a new album, but they’re back with A Bath Full of Ecstasy this June. The lead single “Hungry Child” is a banger and you can hear it below. Other highlights today include a fresh track from the prolific electronic artist Alison Wonderland, plus shoegazers Film School are following up their critically acclaimed reunion record Bright to Death from last year with another EP due sometime this summer. Get a preview with the soaring “Influencer”. There are even more songs for you to stream after the jump, including tracks from Baker Grace, Bazzi, DallasK, Lauren Ruth Ward, Pink Panda, push baby, Rosehardt, Sheila and the Kit, and Siskiyou.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 4-1-19

Happy April Fools Day! As always, keep your eyes and ears peeled for pranks and tricks. In the past I’ve tried to pull off a couple of those myself, even right here on the site, but it’s never as fun as you hope it will be and people get angry about it. So I promise to shoot straight with you today and not pull any stunts. Let’s focus on the music, as there are some great tracks to share in this edition of Pick Your Poison. I’d strongly recommend checking out the new song from Cuco, who feels like an underground superstar right now because he’s built a strong fan base online yet hasn’t yet been picked up by radio stations and TV live talent bookers. I’m also digging the latest single from Emily Reo, and it’s always nice when Chicago area footwork pioneer Jlin puts something new out into the world. Elsewhere after the jump, dig into other tracks from BANNERS, Cosha TG (ft. Lil Zay Osama), Erich Mrak, Escort (ft. Brian Jackson), Lone, Rare DM, Rosie Lowe, Sayer, and Whethan x Bearson (ft. SOAK).

Cuco – Hydrocodone

Emily Reo – Balloon

Jlin – No Name

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 3-28-19

Wrap up the month of March with yet another collection of dynamic and fun tracks. This particular set of songs also has plenty of energy to spare, which can be pretty great inspiration as you prepare for the weekend. The dynamic duo of Aly & AJ are back again with a new one I’d recommend checking out. It’s been fascinating to watch (and hear) the evolution of morgxn over the last year or so, and his latest single marks yet another bold leap forward. Then you can listen to another new song from Olivia O’Brien, who has really impressed me with her latest batch of singles. She’s got a debut album coming out at the end of the month and you may want to keep it on your radar. Of course there’s even more new music past the jump, including tracks from Blood Cultures, Daniella Mason, Dog Blood, Jai Wolf (ft. Dresage), LIFE, OMB Peezy (ft. Boosie Badazz), Yoke Lore, Zaia, and a special tribute to the Godfather of House Music and Chicago’s own Frankie Knuckles.

The Lollapalooza 2019 lineup officially dropped yesterday, and it’s a weirdly fascinating snapshot of the music industry today. Headliners include Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, Twenty One Pilots, The Strokes, Tame Impala, Flume, The Chainsmokers, and J Balvin. The undercard is where it gets really interesting, in my opinion. Notable names include Kacey Musgraves,Janelle Monae, Hozier, Gary Clark Jr., Tenacious D, Death Cab for Cutie, H.E.R., Maggie Rogers, King Princess, Fitz & the Tantrums, Rosalia, Mitski, J.I.D, Japanese Breakfast, Sharon Van Etten, Bishop Briggs, Yaeji, Lennon Stella, Tierra Whack, and like 150 more names. 4-day passes are on sale now for $340 (+fees), along with VIP and Platinum tier tickets. Single day tickets will go on sale presumably when 4-day passes sell out. Check out the full lineup and buy your wristbands over at Lollapalooza.com.

Another artist on the Lolla lineup this year is Hayley Kiyoko, and she lends some guest vocals to a Kailee Morgue track that you can find after the jump below. As for the top tier of today’s Pick Your Poison, please do check out new songs from John Vanderslice, Negative Gemini, and pronoun. All three are pretty great. There’s plenty more great stuff after the jump too, including tracks by Black Pistol Fire, Maggie Lindemann, Ocelot, RYAN Playground, Showtek (ft. Leon Sherman), ShunGu (ft. Pink Siifu), Swimming Bell, and VASSY.

The highlights in this set come from Bandopop (ft. Great times all around. Don’t stop there though, because you’ll find even more music after the jump from Alawn & Dyson, BLU J (ft. New Haven), Empath, Lust for Youth, Novaa, Riot Ten & Stoutty (ft.
