Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 8-14-13

If you’ve never seen Ty Segall perform live before, you’re missing out. The guy’s a dynamic presence on stage, brimming with energy and unafraid to let out a powerful scream that cuts through fuzz-laden guitars should the mood strike him. The two times I’ve seen him perform my attention has never wavered, nor could I stop grinning with giddy excitement over the messy perfection that he embodies. Coming up in a little over a week, Segall will be bouncing all around the country for a few weeks’ worth of live dates in support of his new album Sleeper. That record comes out this upcoming Tuesday, August 20th, and actually marks a shift in direction away from the fused blend of punk and garage rock of his last few efforts and more towards the realm of acoustic psychedelia. Having heard the album a few times, it was challenging to my ears at first, but I’m certainly warming up to it as proof that he can excel at whatever genre of music he tries. You can hear the full thing for yourself right here (for a limited time). If you like what you hear, I’d encourage you to try and see Segall if he’s headed your way on tour. He’ll be in Chicago on August 31st for a show at Logan Square Auditorium that will place a sharp focus on that new album. I’m interested to see how he’ll piece it all together in a live setting. Tickets for that all-ages Logan Square show are $18 and can be purchased in advance here. I hope you won’t miss this great opportunity! You’ll probably also not want to miss some of the great tracks in today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s plenty of delights from Atropolis, Beat the Heart, Chris Zurich, Empty Chairs, Gross Relations, Lizzie Davis and Potty Mouth. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream cuts from Celestial Shore, Goldfrapp, Kelley Stoltz, Pelican and Terry Malts.

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 8-13-13

As summer slowly transitions into fall, the list of new album releases grows longer by the week, and I promise you that next week in particular is going to be a big one. This week though, is still a little lacking in the high profile release department. We’re not quite in the perils of the summer drought that came through in July though, and I’ll prove it to you. Here’s a list of artists putting out new albums today: Dinosaur Bones, Football etc., Jagwar Ma, The Moondoggies, Parachute, Psychic Teens, Royal Teeth, Sam Phillips, Valerie June, Washed Out and The Wild Feathers. Okay, so that’s not a big list by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe I overplayed my hand leading into it. Still, listen to Washed Out’s new one Paracosm and everything will be all right. Or you could listen to any number of songs as part of today’s edition of Pick Your Poison. I’d like to specifically advise you to check out tracks from The Black Watch, Cameron McGill, Marnie Stern, Seaweed Meadows, The Ten Thousand and The Young Sinclairs. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from American Authors (covering Lorde), Blouse, Heavenly Beat, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band (a new project from TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe), Juana Molina and Tink (ft. How to Dress Well).

Aiden Grimshaw – The Way We Are

The Black Watch – Meg

Brandt Brauer Frick – Two in a Bush

Cameron McGill – Sucker Love

Pick Your Poison: Monday 8-12-13

Let’s talk about Arcade Fire for just a minute. They’ve got a brand new, James Murphy produced album set for release on October 29th, which according to Murphy will be “fucking epic”. That’s basically a ringing endorsement if I’ve ever heard one. Beyond that, there are now rumors that the album will be titled Reflektor, in particular because some street art that popped up in several major cities around the world over the first weekend in August (and at Lollapalooza apparently, though I failed to spot anything). There’s now an Instagram account and a website surrounding this same theme and concept. Of course Arcade Fire’s camp isn’t confirming anything, or even an association with anything Reflektor-related thus far. Then came yesterday, in which the aforementioned Instagram account posted three new photos (1, 2, and 3) suggesting something would go down on 9/9 at 9pm. And so it would seem that we’ve got a little less than a month before something “big” is going to happen with this. My guess? It’s going to be the release of a new song, in advance of the album. Maybe by then we’ll also have confirmation of the album title and a track listing. For the time being though, this is one mystery that appears to be worth following along with. Also worth following? Your daily dose of Pick Your Poison. Allow me to present you with some delightful tracks today from Admonic, Les Jupes, Lost Midas, Poor Remy, The Slims, Steel Cranes and Windbreaker. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Bad Things, Cage the Elephant, K.Flay, Russian Circles and Steel Phantoms.

Windbreaker – I Can’t Believe That You’re Gone

Pick Your Poison: Friday 8-9-13

Oh hey! I’m pleased to present one of the rarer occurences as of late, a Friday edition of Pick Your Poison. As I tend to mention when there is a Friday edition, the main reason I stopped doing them was largely a lack of content. If I don’t have enough songs to share with you, then there’s not much point to this, right? So this week there are enough songs, and voila, things are going on a Friday. I hope you’ve got some grand weekend plans ahead of you. I’m happy there’s not a music festival in Chicago this weekend that I’ll be attending, and generally just having not much to do will be nice for once. I might even get an album review or two written, since I haven’t done that in a few weeks. I guess what I’m saying is, I’m very much looking forward to this weekend, and hope you are too. Oh! Next week I’ll be giving away a pair of three day passes to Riot Fest Chicago! The three day passes are sold out, so I’ll have one of the few ways you can still win them. Good stuff, right? Okay, let’s get to today’s tracks. Gold stars go to songs from Bailterspace, Leftover Cuties, MTNS, Sons of the East, Tall Heights, Teen Daze and Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 8-7-13

What’s the big topic in the world of music today? I’m going to go with the Daft Punk “incident” that occurred on The Colbert Report last night. By “incident,” I mean they didn’t show up. Not unlike Death Grips at Lollapalooza (and now subsequent shows), Daft Punk decided to opt out at the last minute of their scheduled appearance at StePhest Colbchella, the now yearly concert that Colbert puts on as part of his show. The reason why? Well, it’s probably best if you just watch it yourself because it’s hilarious. But in a nutshell, Daft Punk apparently signed a contract with MTV to appear at this year’s Video Music Awards, which was to be billed as their only U.S. TV appearance in 2013. For awhile they apparently thought they could get away with going on Colbert, but apparently lawyers and their label stepped in to advise the duo to not travel to New York for the talk show appearance. That, and MTV reportedly threw a hissy fit once they found out about it as well. Since both Comedy Central and MTV are owned by Viacom, it basically came down to some friendly fighting between the two stations. Some might argue the whole incident was planned well in advance, and Billboard says that fill-in guest Robin Thicke’s performance was pre-taped last week, as if to hint that maybe Colbert and the network knew about the problem much farther in advance than they claimed last night. As in, maybe the two networks are actually working together, and this whole thing was an elaborate ruse to promote Daft Punk’s “secret” appearance at the VMAs. I’m pretty well convinced that it’s 90% real and 10% staged. Either way, it resulted in a damn hilarious show for Colbert. Watch the whole thing at the link above if you’ve got the time. If you’re just interested in today’s Pick Your Poison, of course I can help you out there as well. Don’t miss tracks from Clara Moto, Have Gun Will Travel, John Nagle, Lightning Bolt, Prom Date, Richard Youngs and Wolf Eyes. In the Soundcloud section, stream songs from HSY, Keep Shelly in Athens, Rubblebucket and Tree covering Radiohead.

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 8-6-13

We’ve reached another Tuesday, and honestly I’m starting to feel better after a Lollapalooza recovery day yesterday. Things are looking up! Things are also looking up if you’re a fan of new music. The release schedule has been a little relaxed over the course of July with the typical summer lull, however now that August is here there’s a lot more to talk about and anticipate. As a service to you, loyal reader, I like to list the artists releasing new material this week, for the purposes of keeping you informed about artists you love or are going to love in the course of the coming days, weeks, months and years. Pick Your Poison: Monday 8-5-13

Ugh. I am wiped out. The sort of wiped out that has you falling asleep at your keyboard in the middle of the day. The sort of wiped out where all you want to do is crawl into bed and sleep for 24 hours straight, foregoing meals or any other possible life responsibility. Music festivals are not exactly kind to the human body, and a majority of my peers tell me that they can’t do the 8-10 hours of standing, dancing and generally rocking out each day for three days that such a festival sometimes requires. I’ve had marathon runners say that they’re comfortable doing a 5 or 10K in a few hours, but wouldn’t dream of attending a music festival full-on for three days because of the toll it takes on your body. And that’s not even taking into account aftershows. Of course maybe I’m being overly dramatic here. I mean, if you look at things like Coachella and Bonnarroo and Lollapalooza and see 100,000 people or so all trying to survive a weekend (though that doesn’t account for arrival times or single day ticket holders), there are plenty who view music festivals as a challenge. That’s certainly how I used to view it. In a year or two I’ll have been hitting the music festivals hard for 10 years straight, and am arguably worse for the wear. I take Mondays after a music festival off from my full time job because I know at this point I’ll need that day to recover. And I’m clearly still not there yet. But I still love it just the same, though I’m not trying to push myself quite so hard anymore. Showing up at 2 p.m. instead of noon seems a-ok with me if I can get some more sleep and general rest. So please excuse me while I take some time to recover from this year’s Lollapalooza. It was a wild one, and I hope you were there to enjoy it with me, or at the very least watched some of it online. I’ll just leave you with this edition of Pick Your Poison. Choice tracks today come from Chad Kichula, Dustin Wong, Forest Fire, iNCH, Nobody Ever, Party Supplies and PJ Harvey. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new tracks from Cut Copy, Frankie Rose, London Grammar and Mike Donovan.

I hope you’ll be going this year too, as it sold out almost immediately from music hungry fans. Pick Your Poison: Monday 7-29-13

Monday marks the start of Lollapalooza Week here at Faronheit. This is a tradition that has been going on since somewhere around 2006, though of course due to the loss of the site archives during a move back in 2010 you can really only check out coverage from the last couple years, if that’s something you’re looking for. This year is going to be a great time, if the speed of ticket sales are any indication. I’ve got a million and one things planned for this week already, it’s going to be tough to get a normal amount of writing in. But have no fear, I’ll be doing my best to keep you up-to-date with the bands you should see and the crazy shenanigans happening all over Chicago this upcoming weekend. Anticipate a Spotify playlist(s) with artists on the lineup, a preview guide, daily recaps, and final thoughts with photos. Speaking of which, I should mention that if you’re going to be in town on Thursday night and have nothing to do, the folks at FILTER Magazine are throwing a fun (21+) party at Logan Square Auditorium at the cost of FREE. There will be DJ sets from the team behind the forthcoming comedy The World’s End, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright. Also DJing will be Chris Holmes and Windy City Soul Club. Oh yeah, and live performances too, from Chicago’s own Smith Westerns plus the lovely MNDR. Not only is it free to get in and you get to see a movie plus hear some great music, but all drinks will be on the house as well (which is why it’s 21+). Sounds like a great time, right? RSVP here. Things kick off at 9PM on Thursday night, but you’ll probably want to show up early because entry is first come, first served! Now then, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. Don’t miss tracks from Bad Cello, The Bynars, The Dead Daisies, Friendzone, Hailer, Mucca Pazza and Teengirl Fantasy. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Basement Jaxx, Ditt Inre, Girls Against Boys, Kissaway Trail and Supreme Cuts (ft. Channy from Polica).

We’re in the dead heat of music festival season right now in Chicago, and as I shift my focus away from Pitchfork Music Festival and towards the direction of Lollapalooza, I’d like to take a moment to tell you about an exciting event happening next Thursday, August 1st. I don’t know about you, but I’m a pretty big fan of Jessie Ware. Her album Devotion was one of my favorites last year, and I think she’s a future R&B superstar. She’s also performing at the sold out Lollapalooza next weekend. While I’m grateful for music festivals providing a way to see hundreds of bands in a single space over the course of a few days, I do tend to prefer smaller sized performances with artists. It lends a sense of intimacy to things, and you don’t have to deal so much with hot weather and messy crowds. Anyways, the W Hotel on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago is going to be hosting a Lollapalooza pre-party next Thursday featuring an intimate performance by Jessie Ware. You can’t buy tickets to it, and you could well call it a private event, unless you win tickets. Not only that, but you can win a whole prize package that includes a three night stay at the W, two 3-day passes to Lollapalooza, and admittance into the Jessie Ware show on Thursday night. It’s a sweet deal, and you don’t have to sell your firstborn child to enter to win either. Just upload a music-related photo to Instagram before 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 25th and include the hashtag #WMusicINSIDER. Then follow @whotels and @whotelsofchi on Instagram and you’re automatically entered to win. For more details on this contest, go here. Sound good? Now let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s some great tracks today from Body Parts, Cavaliers of Fun, Decoy Jet, Hollis Brown, Paper Lions, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding and Tight Nights. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Claire, Crystal Antlers, Icona Pop, The Lumineers, The Naked and Famous and The Orwells.
