What’s the big topic in the world of music today? I’m going to go with the Daft Punk “incident” that occurred on The Colbert Report last night. By “incident,” I mean they didn’t show up. Not unlike Death Grips at Lollapalooza (and now subsequent shows), Daft Punk decided to opt out at the last minute of their scheduled appearance at StePhest Colbchella, the now yearly concert that Colbert puts on as part of his show. The reason why? Well, it’s probably best if you just watch it yourself because it’s hilarious. But in a nutshell, Daft Punk apparently signed a contract with MTV to appear at this year’s Video Music Awards, which was to be billed as their only U.S. TV appearance in 2013. For awhile they apparently thought they could get away with going on Colbert, but apparently lawyers and their label stepped in to advise the duo to not travel to New York for the talk show appearance. That, and MTV reportedly threw a hissy fit once they found out about it as well. Since both Comedy Central and MTV are owned by Viacom, it basically came down to some friendly fighting between the two stations. Some might argue the whole incident was planned well in advance, and Billboard says that fill-in guest Robin Thicke’s performance was pre-taped last week, as if to hint that maybe Colbert and the network knew about the problem much farther in advance than they claimed last night. As in, maybe the two networks are actually working together, and this whole thing was an elaborate ruse to promote Daft Punk’s “secret” appearance at the VMAs. I’m pretty well convinced that it’s 90% real and 10% staged. Either way, it resulted in a damn hilarious show for Colbert. Watch the whole thing at the link above if you’ve got the time. If you’re just interested in today’s Pick Your Poison, of course I can help you out there as well.
