Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-22-16

On Friday, the lineup for the 2016 Pitchfork Music Festival was released. As many of you hopefully know, this is my favorite music festival every single year, largely due to the crazy amount of up-and-coming talent that performs, not to mention it’s relatively small size. This year continues in the tradition, with notables like Beach House, Broken Social Scene, Brian Wilson (performing Pet Sounds), Sufjan Stevens, Super Furry Animals, Carly Rae Jepsen, FKA twigs, Miguel and many more. On the more obscure side of things, emerging artists such as Car Seat Headrest, BJ the Chicago Kid, Moses Sumney, Nao, Porches, Thundercat and Whitney are all destined to impress and inspire. Check out the full lineup and buy advance tickets here. Looking forward to spending another three days in Union Park this summer, with complete coverage right here on the site. Speaking of emerging artists, there’s a whole bunch in today’s Pick Your Poison. Don’t miss downloads from Ana Caprix, C Duncan, FADES and Grosser. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Dinner, Jennifer O’Connor, John Carpenter, Kelsey Reckling, Little Scream, Mavis Staples, MOSSY, Prince Rama, Race Banyon (ft. Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-18-16

Looking towards the weekend ahead, it would appear that Chicago is about to be on the receiving end of an uncharacteristic mid-winter heat wave. Nearly 60 degrees and sunny in February? That’s the kind of weather I like to see. Then again, it’s also evidence that our planet is heating up, and not in the good kind of way. Sorry, didn’t mean to get all “we’re doomed” in this intro. Let’s just get right to the music, shall we? Some quality downloads you’re not going to want to miss in this edition of Pick Your Poison come from Bronco Simmons, DTCV, Hundred Waters and Slide Dillinger. Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-16-16

After a short break for the holiday(s), it’s time to get back to action. Hope your Valentines Day was great, along with your President’s Day and Grammy Day. Speaking of the Grammys, they’re not typically an awards ceremony I put much stock in, particularly since their focus appears to be largely driven by album sales than actual talent. Creativity and originality often gets the short end of the stick, but this year more than most I had higher hopes. Many of the nominees were actually solid picks, especially Kendrick Lamar, who was up for more awards than anyone else. He wound up actually winning five, which was nice, but missed out on the biggest award of the night, Album of the Year. That honor went to Taylor Swift’s 1989, which isn’t a bad album by any means, but once again popularity and sales trumped innovation. These things happen. In terms of the performances, there were plenty to choose from, but once again Kendrick stole the show with a three song medley that was strange, theatric and fiery. It was a nice change of pace compared to the stale and/or classic-leaning performances that otherwise dominated the night. Alabama Shakes were good too. Lady Gaga’s tribute to David Bowie was…okay, but was a bit too campy, which is something Bowie definitely wasn’t. Overall I guess you could call it a very disappointing evening, with a few small bright spots. Ah well, that’s about par for the course. Until next year, Grammys. In the here and now, there’s a fresh edition of Pick Your Poison ready for your ears. There are some past and future Grammy nominees in this set, some easier to spot than others. Don’t miss downloads from American Killers, Giraffage, The Smoking Bells and Wench. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Classixx ft. Joe Keefe (covering Natalie Prass), David Vassalotti, Day Wave, Happy Hollows, Johnny Jewel (ft. Pick Your Poison: Thursday 2-11-16

This afternoon, after several months of teasing it, Kanye West finally unveiled his new album The Life of Pablo. The title and tracklisting are actually things he didn’t settle on until yesterday, and presumably the entire thing will be available to stream/download at some point on Friday. Physical versions will likely be out in a month or two, once they have a chance to actually get manufactured. What went down today was a party at Madison Square Garden during which Kanye showed off his new clothing line while playing the album in its entirety. For those who weren’t able to get to New York to attend, there was a live stream on Tidal. That’s how I watched it, and in all honesty the spectacle was quite self-serving and congratulatory, but also pretty brilliant. That’s kind of Kanye in a nutshell anyways. One of the more notable things during the broadcast was the song “Famous,” which contained the lines, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that bitch famous.” The Taylor in question is presumably Taylor Swift, and given that the two of them have been friends the last few years following his stage crashing incident in 2009, it would appear that friendship is over. So if anything, that’s one takeaway from the launch party worth noting. As for the full album, it sounded solid to me, though many more listens are ahead to better judge. In the meantime, please enjoy this final Pick Your Poison for the week, with quality downloads in this set from 23:23, Cotton Mather, Esquela and Old Monk. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Acid Dad, Agent bla, Britta Phillips, Eskimeaux, Film School, Kyle Forester, Mood Hut, Nisennenmondai, Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop, Show Me The Body and Teleman.

Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 2-2-16

It’s Groundhog Day, and if you believe in the power of a rodent to predict the weather, there’s good news ahead. In short, it looks like we’ll be getting an early spring. Of course thanks to El Nino spending the winter here in the U.S., that’s not terribly difficult to believe. Temperatures have been on average higher than normal around much of the country, and snow less frequent, despite the occasional blizzard. So after my complaints about February yesterday, so far this month is 2 for 2 in terms of good days. Let’s keep that trend going, shall we? In today’s Pick Your Poison, don’t miss downloads from AMERIA, KINGDOMS, Masayoshi Iimori and Vincent Colbert. Pick Your Poison: Monday 2-1-16

Welcome to February, a month that I typically regard as the worst of any year. My disdain for it has virtually nothing to do with Valentine’s Day or President’s Day or any other pseudo-holiday scheduled. It’s more of a weather-related, overall misery sort of feeling that permeates the month so much the calendar makers even cut a few days out so it’d only last 28 days. In 2016 we get 29 thanks to leap year rules. But who knows, maybe it won’t be so bad. It’s nice to be hopeful whenever possible, so I’m choosing to believe the days ahead will all be winners. Pick Your Poison is helpful getting things started right, with a solid set of tracks that include downloads from Federal Lights, The Head, Idalee, Sharks In The Deep End and Wanderwild. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from AMTHST, Carter Tanton (ft. Sharon Van Etten), Earl Sweatshirt, Flume (ft. Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 1-27-16

Woof. Did you devote any attention to that Kanye West/Wiz Khalifa feud that happened on Twitter this afternoon? It was a doozy, at least from Kanye’s perspective. See, Wiz had been cracking a couple of lighthearted jokes about Kanye changing the name of his album from SWISH to WAVES, and then commented about “KK” which Kanye interpreted as an attempt to hit on his wife, Kim Kardashian. The thing was, Wiz was referring to a certain strain of weed with the nickname “KK”. Anyways, the confusion caused Kanye to go on a tweet rampage where he viciously insulted Wiz over and over again while simultaneously complimenting his style choices, particularly when it comes to pants. The whole thing was a bit dark but also very funny in hindsight. If you’re interested, check out the full play-by-play here. Now then, let’s dive right into a fresh mid-week edition of Pick Your Poison to enjoy while wearing stylish pants. Don’t miss downloads from Ashley Shadow, Chet Faker, Jesse Marco and Reina del Cid. Hope everyone on the East Coast is doing okay following that massive blizzard that hit over the weekend. Feeling particularly fortunate to be in Chicago where El Nino has made it a remarkably dry (and slightly warmer than average) winter so far. January has actually been somewhat bearable. Wishing warmth and safety to all my friends and readers on the East Coast this upcoming weekend as a massive snowstorm heads your way. I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times already, but don’t go outside unless you absolutely have to! That’s actually good advice for anyone experiencing less than ideal winter conditions. Curling up on the couch with a good movie is one of the few things that can’t be beat. Maybe listen to some new music while you’re at it, too. Pick Your Poison can help with that, as always. Enjoy downloads in this set from Chrome Sparks, Foxtails Brigade, Mykki Blanco and Say No! to Architecture. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from AlunaGeorge (ft.
