Pick Your Poison: Tuesday 12-8-15

Oh hey, Tuesday. You crept up on me there. I’ve just returned for an incredible Andrew Bird holiday show, which he does in Chicago for a few nights each December. There won’t be a formal review here on the site, but let me just say that if you have the opportunity to see him perform solo inside of an old church, there’s a certain amount of magic that will be in the air. It’s easily one of my favorite live shows of 2015. Sometimes you can just tell, electricity in the air and all. Anyways, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison, which features some solid tracks from Dan Hubbard, Husky Rescue, Nathaniel Bellows and Peru. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from A$AP Ferg, CFCF, David Bazan (covering The Killers), DMA’s, Harriet, Jordan Klassen, P’ARIS, Sleigh Bells and Those Darlins (covering Divine).

Pick Your Poison: Monday 12-7-15

Listmas officially begins in one week! Hooray! There are plenty of publications that have taken a certain amount of pride in being among the first to publish their year-end best of lists, and exciting as the season can be, I’m of the firm belief that a measured approach is necessary to truly reflect on the past year. You can’t truly say it’s the best of 2015 if you’re only including 11 of the 12 months. Now while there’s not much in the way of new music released in December, you never know if some superstar artist (D’Angelo, Beyonce) will wait until the very last minute to drop a brand new album on us. Of course that usually comes in the final, post-Christmas week anyways, so all the lists are locked in by that point whether they’re published or not. Still, I believe in caution. So we’ll kick off Listmas next Monday with the countdown of my Top 50 Songs of 2015. It’s set to be exciting, and you’re likely to see a few Pick Your Poison entries make the final cut. Speaking of which, there are some great new tracks in this set that I suppose are all under last minute list consideration. Don’t miss downloads from Credential, Lennart Richter, Problems and SKATERS. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Cheatahs, DUST, dvsn, ELEL, Geographer, Holy Sons, POP ETC, Roly Porter and Sleepercar.

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 12-3-15

As I was preparing to post this edition of Pick Your Poison, the news broke that Scott Weiland had died. There are very few details available as I’m writing this, except that his management confirmed he passed away in his sleep while on tour in Minnesota. He was 48 years old. Weiland’s struggles with drug addiction have been well-known since the mid-90s. He was arrested several times for drug possession, and his often cavalier attitude about using caused the initial break-up of Stone Temple Pilots in 2002, among other things. While drugs have not been identified as a cause of death at this time, it’s hard not to think they may have played a factor given his past. But I’d like to take a brief moment to recognize Weiland for the incredible music he helped create over the last few decades. His early albums with STP, specifically 1992’s Core and 1994’s Purple, meant and continue to mean quite a lot to me. They’re right up there with grunge-era classics from Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. From there things get a little more checkered, but I could always find a few songs to like on every album Weiland attached his name to over the years. His work as frontman of supergroup Velvet Revolver was interesting, if imperfect, and his early solo recordings, particularly 1998’s 12 Bar Blues showcased a different side of his personality. The point being, music lost another great talent today. Like so many before him, his raw potential may have been squandered due to personal issues, but it’s essential to appreciate and respect the many contributions he made and lives he changed in the process. You will be missed, Scott. Condolences to your family, friends and bandmates past and present.

Now please enjoy this selection of new music. There are some quality downloads in this set from Ben Millburn, Bethlehem Casuals, Loframes and Pleasant Grove. Pick Your Poison: Thursday 11-19-15

Trouble’s a-brewin’ here in the Chicagoland area. Specifically, weather trouble. While we’re technically no strangers to November snow, and I can even recall some light dustings in past years on Halloween, apparently what’s headed Chicago’s way this weekend is a bit of a monstrosity. The meteorologists are suggesting snow totals could range anywhere from 4-16 inches depending on location. In other words, it’s not going to be fun. If you don’t hear from me on Monday, maybe call someone to check snowdrifts for my body. Weather incidents aside, let’s shovel out some fresh new music for the final Pick Your Poison this week. There are some quality downloads in this set from Cold Air, Danny L Harle, Frank Rabeyrolles and The Head. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Anna Meredith, Cavern of Anti-Matter, Florist, Marrow, Pete Astor, Pimp C (ft. Paris, je t’aime. It’s always so upsetting to hear about any act of terrorism, and what took place last Friday was no different. That it involved one of the world’s great cities (Paris) and a pretty great band (Eagles of Death Metal) really heightened the impact for me. All of my love to the victims of this senseless violence and their families. In times of great tragedy and sadness, music can play an important role in the grieving process. I’m not sure if anything in today’s Pick Your Poison will specifically help, but it’s worth a shot. There are some strong downloads in this set from Double Lined Minority, Violent Mae, Young Thug and (Z). In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Allie X, BASECAMP, Beverly, The Big Pink, Cassie Ramone, Chrome Sparks, DAWN, Radiation City and Your Friend.

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 11-12-15

We’re in a period of the year that I like to call the doldrums of fall. It’s that time when it’s cold, wet and dark outside a majority of the time, and there’s very little to look forward to outside of holidays that are still weeks away. At least the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a full month of shopping, egg nog and themed parties to attend. The gap between Halloween and Thanksgiving though is a lull, and nearly on par with late January/early February in terms of excitement factor. To put it another way, I’m a little bored and run down. But the great news is that there’s still plenty of new music being pumped out into the world, not to mention plenty of things to review from earlier in the year as “best of” list-making season is right around the corner. So let’s take this moment to pause and reflect before jumping into this fresh edition of Pick Your Poison. Don’t miss downloads from Addie Pray, Deap Valley, DiamondDahi, Germany Germany and Via App. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Atmosphere (ft. Blueprint & Aesop Rock), Daniel Amedee, Freddie Gibbs (ft. Black Thought), Memoryy, Oneohtrix Point Never, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Sunflower Bean, Wet, World Champion and much more.
