Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 5-14-14

When you really think about it, Chicago is incredibly blessed when it comes to music festivals. It’s the third largest city in the country, but first when it comes to fests. L.A. doesn’t really have a major festival unless you count Coachella which is out in the desert a couple hours away. New York has things like Governor’s Ball and The Roots Picnic, but they’re not necessarily massive spectacles. The city has plenty of shows, most are just spread out all over the place instead of concentrated at a big festival. And while other major cities like Seattle, San Francisco and Austin all have multiple music festivals, none are quite the collection that Chicago has, which includes Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, Wavefront, and North Coast, just to name a few. But the one I really want to talk about right now is Riot Fest & Carnival. They just announced a majority of their lineup, and suddenly have established themselves as a major player in the music festival world. This marks the 10th anniversary of Riot Fest, and I guess they wanted to pull out all the stops. Originally started as a punk rock festival in line with the Warped Tour (minus the tour part), the last couple of years they’ve moved away from that theme a bit to incorporate different types of bands, ideally to bring in a greater collection of people. Last year they orchestrated a big “get” in having The Replacements headline in what were their first reunion shows (and pretty much the only ones they did in 2013 I think). That, plus bands like The Dismemberment Plan and Pixies were enough to get me out to Humboldt Park for a day that was a little rainy but also delightful. This year I’m automatically in for all three days thanks to a stacked bill that includes The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, The National, Rise Against, Weezer, The Flaming Lips, Slayer, The Offspring, Wu-Tang Clan, Samhain, Descendents, Tegan and Sara, Metric, Cheap Trick, Patti Smith, Mastodon, Afghan Whigs, Pussy Riot, Superchunk, Naked Raygun, Failure, The Dandy Warhols, Andrew W.K., Kurt Vile, The Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, Hot Snakes, Thurston Moore, The Pizza Underground, The Hotelier and a whole lot more. There’s plenty I want to see, and you should come out September 12-14 if you can make it. Three day passes are on sale now and can be purchased here. There are also smaller Riot Fests in Denver and Toronto during different weekends in September if you’d prefer, but Chicago is the big one. It might be my favorite festival lineup for 2014, though Pitchfork is fighting hard for that honor, as it does every year. Okay, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. Good tracks in this set come from Champagne Jerry (ft. Kathleen Hanna), Flagship, Fur Cough, The Landing, Malibu Shark Attack and TOTEM. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Cheerleader, Greys, Joan As Police Woman, LCTRISC, and Sharon van Etten.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 5-12-14

“Oh Morrissey, when will you ever learn?” is probably a phrase that’s been said far too often over the many years he’s been making music. The man is a living legend, responsible for some incredible records with The Smiths and some pretty good ones on his own, and perhaps because of that it’s allowed him to be an unrepentant asshole. It seems like he is almost always involved in some sort of controversy, like it’s something he thrives on. I heard a rock star tell a story once about how his band got kicked off of a tour opening for Morrissey because he deemed them “too boring.” If you’re spending time with the guy and are unable to keep him amused, look out I guess. But if he’s not tossing people aside, he’s doing things like writing an autobiography that was almost never published because he got into a fight with his publisher. Seems he wanted the booked to be part of the “Penguin Classics” series, which is a label reserved for only the most important of novels. In the end he got his way, as that’s something I’m sure he’s very much used to by now. Hence this latest incident, in which Moz was playing a show at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA the same venue where a show with PAWS and We Are Scientists was set to happen at the Constellation Room nearby. Per reports from the PAWS and We Are Scientists camps, Morrissey felt that other bands performing close by might disrupt or cause sound bleed into his set, and was none too pleased about it. The venue first offered to pay PAWS double their fee to drop off the bill so their opening set with We Are Scientists wouldn’t overlap with Morrissey’s show. As they didn’t like the idea of being paid NOT to play and didn’t want to disappoint their fans, they chose to play anyways. The venue got worried this might cause Morrissey to cancel outright, and pushed back the start time of the PAWS/WAS show to ensure there wouldn’t be a conflict. Apparently that wasn’t good enough for Moz’s management however, and someone from his camp demanded that PAWS apologize for essentially refusing a buyout of their set. Apparently things got heated and Morrissey’s manager started screaming at the band (according to them). In the end, all three bands performed, though the PAWS/WAS show was delayed until after Morrissey had finished. We Are Scientists put together some hilarious tweets making fun of Moz after the show, as one might be inspired to do when dealing with somebody known for temper tantrums and getting his way. Naturally, once everything was said and done, Morrissey’s camp denied any problems took place and claimed that he was perfectly fine with the two other bands performing as long as there was no sound bleed. While I believe that the PAWS/WAS account of things was correct, I also kind of believe that Morrissey himself had little to nothing to do with any of it, and that his management team was acting on his behalf. Moz may have offhandedly said something like, “I hope we won’t have any sound bleed from the venue across the way tonight,” and his people then flipped out and tried in overzealous fashion to eliminate any potential problems. That’s their job, though they could have at least been polite about it, particularly with the whole “demanding an apology” part. Needless to say, I don’t think either PAWS or We Are Scientists will be joining Morrissey on tour any time soon, or ever for that matter. Now then, let’s talk about something significantly less controversial, which is the Monday edition of Pick Your Poison. Don’t miss tracks today from Cajsa Siik, Daytona, Kaela Sinclair, St. Tropez, TOWNS and W X L V E S. Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 5-7-14

Every now and then I like to provide something of a service to my Chicago readers by writing about an interesting or important show that will be happening in town in the near future. While the site doesn’t have a concert calendar, it is nice to get the word out about some great bands and great shows that go beyond the music that gets shared in the daily editions of Pick Your Poison. Today I want to write a few words about two pretty great bands who are touring together and will be at Metro next Tuesday, May 13th. The first band on the double bill is Braids. Their second record Flourish // Perish came out last year and marked an interesting step in a more electronic-based direction. While the album lacked a little bit of the oddball charm that their 2011 debut Native Speaker had, thanks to formidable cuts like “Amends” and “In Kind” there was still plenty that impressed. Actually, a couple weeks ago they released a non-album cut called “Deep Running” that may not have worked in the context of that last record but still does a fantastic job getting at the core of what makes Braids such a special band. As they’re a Montreal-based band signed to Arbutus Records, they’ve been compared recently to labelmate and fellow Canadian Grimes. Braids explores more space and psychedelic elements in their music though, and are less concerned with composing the sort of hooks found in traditional pop music. That’s something I find admirable. Sharing the bill with Braids is another band that I have great admiration for, which is Baltimore/Portland-based band Wye Oak. The duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack just released their fourth full length Shriek, and like their tourmates have made a conscious decision to move away from a guitar-based sound towards something more electronic and synth-based. Long-time fans of Wasner’s muscular guitar work may miss it, but vocally and compositionally the band has never been stronger. That’s evidenced by singles such as “The Tower,” “Glory” and the album title track. It’s funky and fun, and the clean, clear foundations provided by the synths on most tracks allows Wasner to stretch her vocals to new, expressive heights. So as you can see, both of these bands are worth your time and hard-earned money. If you want to see them live when they play Metro on Tuesday night, tickets are $18 in advance ($20 day of) and can be purchased here. Beyond what I’ve just covered, we’ve got a fresh edition of Pick Your Poison for your mid-week pleasure! There’s some great tracks in this set from Ancient Babes, Broadwing, Gene the Southern Child, Pacific Mean Time, Siberian Front and We Came From Wolves. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Brett, Jaded Inc., Kitty, Kuhrye-oo, Say Lou Lou, Spider Bags and Turn to Crime.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 5-5-14

Feliz Cinco de Mayo mis amigos! I think that’s correct Spanish. It’s been several years since I’ve had to use it, but today seems like an appropriate day to dust it off. I hope you enjoyed a margarita and your favorite Mexican dish in celebration of the holiday. Speaking of ethnicities, have you heard about this racism controversy involving The Flaming Lips? I know with rancher Cliven Bundy and Clippers owner Donald Sterling there’s been a lot of issues surrounding racism lately, so it’s kind of easy to see how this one may have gotten swept under the rug. Granted, this also isn’t as juicy of a story. The plot is as follows. Back in March, Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock left the band. No reason was given for his exit at the time. Now Scurlock has started to speak up, and blames an argument with band frontman Wayne Coyne as the reason he was “fired” from the band. It stems from an incident in early March, where Christina Fallin, the daughter of Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin, posted a photo on Instagram in which she was wearing a Native American headdress. It was basically a promotional stunt for her band Pink Pony (aka Chrome Pony), and after it generated a lot of controversy, she apologized about the photo. Apparently Christina Fallin also imitated a Native American war dance during her band’s show at the Norman Music Festival, which caused additional problems and resulted in another apology. What this boils down to is that Coyne jumped to the defense of (his friend) Fallin, while Scurlock called her out and was angry about her misappropriation of Native American culture. Well, when I say “called her out” I mean he made some angry comments about it on social media both directly to her and at others as well. Scurlock says he doesn’t regret what he did, but does feel one or two things he posted may have gone a little too far, and removed them shortly after posting them. But Fallin saw some of the posts, got upset and told Coyne about it. This turned into some angry text message exchanges between the two Flaming Lips members, and it’s something that Scurlock assumed would blow over as Coyne apparently can be a real hothead from time to time. Well, after their initial argument, they had band practice together the next day and things seemed to be largely back to normal until later that night when Coyne sent more angry texts and suggested potentially firing Scurlock from the band. He would follow through on that threat a few hours later. So what does all of this tell us? Well, like most bands, The Flaming Lips are not immune to arguments and differences of opinions between members. Per Scurlock’s account of events, Coyne is painted as angry, abusive, and flippant when it comes to Native American culture. Well, perhaps he’s not flippant about it, but is certainly willing to defend the controversial and racist actions of his friends. How accurate is all of this? Coyne has done very little to defend himself, outside of posting some quotes about eliminating hate from your life and embracing love. Considering all of the strange stunts that Coyne has put together under the Lips name over the last few years, including gummy and chocolate creations that include music on USB sticks buried within, working with pop stars like Ke$ha and Miley Cyrus on psychedelic songs and projects, crafting nudity filled NSFW videos and playing one extended 24 hour jam session, there seems to be a grand attention-seeking element to it all. In some sense it reeks of desperation, even as it can also be regarded as somewhat cool. And while Coyne projects himself as this cool, laid back guy on stage and via social media, there’s also some obvious indications that much of it is an act designed to sell product. As a Flaming Lips fan, I’ve been somewhat ambivalent about the band these last few years, and assuming what Scurlock says is true it lessens my enthusiasm even more. If you’d like to read Scurlock’s lengthy, full statement on the matter, all of the gory details can be found here. Now let’s try to bring some levity back to today with some free music to download and stream. Don’t miss mp3s in this set from Armand Margjeka, The Glorious, Mr. Flash, The River MOnks and Twin Berlin. Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 4-30-14

Class of 2014 update! It’s been a little while since I’ve done one of these, so as we wrap up the first quarter of the year now’s as good of a time as any to reflect a little bit on how things are going with some of the 10 artists I chose to significantly raise their profiles this year. Let’s break this down alphabetically, meaning we’ll start with Banks. She’s just unleashed a new single called “Goddess,” which is definitely worth checking out. It’s the title track from her forthcoming album, expected to be released on September 9th via Harvest Records. You can preorder the 18 track deluxe version on iTunes right now. GEMS continue to work on their debut LP, but seem to be spending a lot of time on the road touring as well. They’ve actually played three shows in Chicago over the last three months, including dates with Classixx and Tycho. Honestly, when I saw them in February their live show could have used some improvement, so with any luck extensive touring has only helped. As you may have seen yesterday, Kelela just put out a new track called “Want It” that’s a collaboration with Chicago’s own Tink as part of the “Songs from Scratch” series by Yours Truly. With any luck, it’s a prelude to new material that will be out later this year. Looking forward to her set at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival as well. Speaking of live sets, while I missed Lo-Fang when he came through Chicago opening for Lorde earlier this spring, he’ll be rolling back through town this Friday night for a headlining show at Schubas. Tickets are $12 and I encourage you to join me if you can. Perfect Pussy continue their whirlwind 2014 by contributing a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Candy’s Room” to Rookie Magazine as the “theme song” for their new issue. That’s just one of many higher profile things the band has done of late. Their debut album Say Yes to Love received a wealth of positive attention, and I’ll be reviewing it myself in the next week or less. Royal Blood continue to plug away at their debut full length, but I did hear their single “Out of the Black” on the radio a couple of times in the last month or so. It’s an early sign of bigger things to come, and Lollapalooza this August will be one of them. Saint Pepsi released his Gin City EP at the end of February, and will be going on tour with Painted Palms this summer. That includes a stop in Chicago at the Empty Bottle on June 27th, which you can bet I’ll be at. Should be a lot of fun. Last but absolutely not least, there’s Sam Smith. At the start of 2014 he was scheduled to play a show in March at Subterranean in Chicago, which has about a 300 capacity. By February the show was moved to the 1,000 capacity Vic Theatre due to demand. Then SNL asked him to perform on the same night as the Chicago show, so it was postponed to the end of April. The additional exposure turned the rescheduled show into a sell out. To say the guy’s profile is on the rise would be an understatement. He’s a fantastic performer and sounds even better live than he does on record. At the Chicago show, girls were screaming like he marked the second coming of The Beatles. Most waited around to try and meet him afterwards, and eventually security was forced to turn about half of them away because it was all too much. And to think his album doesn’t come out until June! People are going to completely flip out, more than they are already. So 25% of the way through the year, how is the Class of 2014 doing? So far, so good if you ask me. Let’s keep it going for the next 9 months! Now then, as to today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s some good tracks in the mix from EVVY, The Hudson Branch, Lily and the Tigers, Sam Roberts Band and Shane Gamble. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, don’t miss streaming songs from Chance the Rapper, Donovan Blanc, Hooray for Earth, Megan Bonnell (covering Bob Dylan) and remixes from Julia Holter and Mogwai.

Album Review: Real Estate – Atlas [Domino]

If you’ve heard a Real Estate record before, very little may surprise you about their new one Atlas. It’s another collection of lackadaisical songs with weaving guitar melodies supplemented by jangly chords. This time however, everything gets alternately clearer and cloudier. How so? Well, to start this is the first Real Estate album that’s been cleanly produced and doesn’t have touches of lo-fi haze built into it. Matt Mondanile’s serpentine guitar work benefits most from this adjustment, glimmering like a freshly polished diamond. It’s most effective on tracks like “Primitive” and “Had to Hear,” when you could almost refer to those lead guitar parts as another voice that acts in tandem with Martin Courtney’s silky vocals. This is a band that has quietly become a well oiled machine, as they now know what works and how to get there with the least amount of trouble. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the lyrics on Atlas, which bring the dizzyingly fun highs of their previous records down to earth. Real Estate were the sort of band that wrote songs about spending time at the beach or bumming around suburbia with your friends on a summer day, but now the sky has become overcast and the temperature has taken a nosedive. “Our careless lifestyle, it was not so unwise,” Courtney sang on “Green Aisles” from the band’s 2011 record Days. As nice of a sentiment as that was, those days (so to speak) are over, and now it’s time to grow up and be a responsible adult. Going along with that are relationship struggles (“Talking Backwards”), crippling anxiety (“Crime”) and the realization that everything changes and we can never truly go back (“Past Lives”). Pairing those emotions with the band’s trademark sound proves to be a rather inspired combination, resulting in their catchiest and most mature album to date. It’s also their best, right down to the carefully structured sequencing. All of this shows that Real Estate have certainly learned a thing or two both personally and professionally over the last few years. Now it’s time for them to teach us, and that goes well beyond simple guitar tab videos.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 4-28-14

I think we can all agree that Arcade Fire put on one hell of a live show. If you’ve never seen it, that’s something you should seek out immediately, or as soon as the band rolls through your city next. They’ve pretty much been that way since the beginning, however it has been fascinating watching how they’ve changed things and evolved over time. These days surrounding their latest record Reflektor, Arcade Fire have put together their most elaborate show yet, complete with costumes, giant papier mache heads and a whole bunch of additional musicians to help flesh out many of the arrangements. I won’t get the chance to see it in person until this August, however if you’re like me and are interested in learning more about how this big stadium show comes together, there’s good news. The band has put together a six minute short film that goes behind the scenes on their current tour and talks about their goals and the aesthetic they’re trying to achieve at each new stop. It’s pretty fascinating and worth a watch. Check it out here. Now then, let’s get to this Monday edition of Pick Your Poison. There’s some good tracks today from Doss, Fat Goth, Irie Idea, Mustard Pimp and Vienna Ditto. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Baths, Bleachers, Blood Orange, Doprah, French For Rabbits and Kirin J. Callinan (covering K.D. Lang?!).

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 4-23-14

As I like to do from time to time, let’s chat for a brief minute about a worthwhile show that’s going to be happening in Chicago in the near future. It’s something that I like to do for all of the locals who keep up with the site, just to make sure we’re all on the same page. So this upcoming Saturday two really interesting UK bands who have recently released their debut albums will be playing a show together at Lincoln Hall. Think of Drowners as the sort of band that grew up on Britpop in the early 90’s, probably because they legitimately did. Their self-titled record that came out earlier this year feels like a cross between The Smiths and Blur, which is to say it’s remarkably catchy with equal parts energy and melancholy. Check out the videos for “Luv, Hold Me Down” and “A Button on Your Blouse” to get a better idea of what these boys are all about. Headlining the show will be Temples, who I like to call “Tame Impala Jr.” Yes, they play buzzy, psychedelic tunes that are economically composed and stick in your head for days. Their album Sun Structures is packed with worthwhile singles such as “Shelter Song,” “Keep in the Dark,” “Colours to Life” and “Mesmerise.” Yeah, this is a band on their way to stardom, and without a doubt they won’t be playing small-ish venues like Lincoln Hall for much longer. If you’ve already got tickets for this 21+ show, consider yourself lucky. If not, hold out hope that some additional ones might be released before Saturday. Here’s a link to the ticket purchase page, just in case. What a great way to spend a Saturday night in Chicago! Okay, let’s get on with today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s some great tracks in this set from Frances England, Grace Joyner, Pamina, Shelf Nunny and The Wonder Revolution. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Dub Thompson, Hercules & Love Affair, Little Dragon, Movement, Torres. Trash Talk and Flume’s remix of Lorde’s “Tennis Court.”
