Sure there was a little rain to start the weekend, and it did delay me an extra hour as I searched various stores to find a poncho, but once I walked through the gates at Union Park for another year of Pitchfork Music Festival, I felt like I was home. It was a little disheartening to miss Arooj Aftab’s and Ethel Cain’s sets at the beginning of the day. I’ll have to catch them both at a later date. In the meantime, please here’s a bite-sized social media recap of the many sets I saw on Friday.
After a quest to find a poncho, finally made it to #p4kfest in time to catch most of @thespiritoftheb. Their set managed to be both stunningly gorgeous and abrasively loud when it needed to be. Utterly compelling to experience.

Yeah, @themonaleo has been having a WEEK, but when she stepped out on that #p4kfest stage this afternoon suddenly all was right in the world. Her Chicago debut was impressive, and a bit emotional. Bigger and better things ahead for her, I suspect.

The rain may be picking up in Union Park, but so is @wikset as he pushes through with a really killer #p4kfest performance. pic.twitter.com/49xuKelp3Y

“Pitchfork has been really nice to me in my life, so it feels good to be giving back right now.” –@IndigoDeSouza at the end of a highly emotional #p4kfest set that felt like the sky was crying along with everyone else. pic.twitter.com/f9BMSR47iD

The joy, the twirls, the rich tapestry of a seven-piece band. The rain couldn’t dampen the incredible spirit of SPELLLING’s set at #p4kfest pic.twitter.com/LhMv7Ez71A

In the span of 2 minutes, Georgia Maq of Camp Cope called the Pitchfork Plus people “rich cunts”, told the Supreme Court and the police to “go fuck themselves”, and gave a shout out to all the trans/non-binary folks in the crowd. Oh, and the songs were great too. #p4kfest pic.twitter.com/jGBE5Rhuf1

Nobody was having more fun on stage at #p4kfest today than @TierraWhack. In between performing a bunch of spectacular tracks, she was giving shout-outs, bringing fans on stage, and leading crowd sing-alongs. That’s how it’s done! pic.twitter.com/kBkYSM4Wac

Gotta love Parquet Courts freely jumping through all their different sonic evolutions at #p4kfest. One minute they’re taking you on a heavy psychedelic journey, and the next they’re leaning into beats designed to make you dance. Truly the Talking Heads of our current era. pic.twitter.com/lJ1Hyzitjr

If you’ve never seen a @DawnRichard live show, you are absolutely missing out. Not only does she sound even better than on her records, but there are outfits and dancers and a live band that just elevate the material to a whole other level. Another stellar #p4kfest performance. pic.twitter.com/VulOuM9YhI

How @officialSpzd never became this era’s Pink Floyd remains a mystery to me. Something about their driving psychedelia floating out over the dimming, overcast sky at Union Park just feels so incredibly right. #p4kfest

I dare anyone to watch an @ambermark performance and not be totally charmed by the experience. She’s singing her heart out at #p4kfest and I couldn’t spot a single person in the crowd not grooving along, having an absolute blast. What a talent! pic.twitter.com/vYlNclte2S
