You know that magical tingle you get throughout your whole body when you see, hear, smell, touch, or taste something truly magnificent? No, I’m not talking about a stroke or some other medical condition. It’s the good kind of invisible electricity that makes your hair stand on end for a few seconds. The technical term for it is frisson. On Sunday at Pitchfork Music Festival, I experienced frisson. An artist’s* performance drew it out of me, and it’s one of my favorite things when that happens. Who was responsible? The only way you’ll find out is by going past the jump and reading through my brief social recap of Day 3 at this wonderful festival.
Took my time getting to #p4kfest today, because sleep and self-care are important. Injury Reserve putting on a fascinating set right now. Ritchie and Parker are doing their thing with fog machines in overdrive, while recordings of Stepa’s (RIP) verses are being added in.

Some folks have been joking around here on Twitter dot com about #p4kfest booking Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society, asking why blockbuster film director JJ Abrams would be performing at a music festival. Well who’s laughing now??? The trumpet player, that’s who. 😉 pic.twitter.com/pbiVAKSezs

Erika de Casier made her U.S. festival debut with just a laptop & drummer, but they made the minimal setup work. Not the most energetic set, but her strong vocals + relaxed R&B worked well for a Sunday afternoon at #p4kfest. Also congrats on the cum gutters, Pitchfork cameraman. pic.twitter.com/8RVjEMywix

After some sound issues delayed the start of her #p4kfest set, @xeniarubinos came out and delivered one of the most emotionally powerful and visually spectacular sets of the entire weekend. That voice! She was singing in Spanish half the time and still brought me to tears. pic.twitter.com/vExtYl7XtF

Chicago really missed @noname, and turned out huge for her #p4kfest set. Such incredible joy radiating both on and off the stage, with a set list packed with some of her best. Here’s hoping she’ll be back sooner rather than later! pic.twitter.com/R22tkyjdTT

Sure, he was 15 minutes late for his set (per a self-proclaimed “Earl superfan,” he’s always on time), but once he got started @earlxsweat just built momentum and took command in yet another dynamite #p4kfest performance. pic.twitter.com/kZdqTFDbtx

“I mean, I love Tirzah…but I just can’t.” – someone said this rather loudly in the crowd during a quiet moment between songs. If I could hear it, Tirzah probably could too. Anyway, her #p4kfest set started 20 mins late, dragged out of the gate, but got better by the end. pic.twitter.com/tk55pMIkKP

Love a fun dance party at #p4kfest, so thank goodness @ToroyMoi came in and got people moving on a Sunday night. We got all the hits, from “Ordinary Pleasure” to the Flume collab “The Difference” and closing it out with “Freelance”. Couldn’t really ask for much more. pic.twitter.com/PgnTgSKUxj

A rich and rewarding set from @CateLeBon at #p4kfest, pulling from across her catalog and rendering each song with tenderness and beauty. Brought some much-needed serenity to Sunday evening, like a centering reset for the week ahead. pic.twitter.com/BjtFxEmBcP

Much admiration and love to @theroots, who played #p4kfest for nearly 90 minutes straight with zero song breaks and managed to squeeze in tracks from across their catalog, a few covers, a keytar solo(!), and even a @hannibalburess guest spot. Sounded fantastic throughout too. pic.twitter.com/JTwJHS9qcc

*In case it wasn’t clear, I was talking about Xenia Rubinos! A dead heat between her set and The Armed for “Best of the Fest”.
