Ah, Monday. Pretty much everybody’s least favorite day of the week. Back to work or school after a weekend off is never fun. One of the better parts about a Monday though are when you’re able to sit back and reminisce for just a moment about the weekend’s many adventures, possibly even sharing a story or two with friends or co-workers who weren’t there. For me personally, I celebrated a birthday this past weekend, which was nice. And while I received some good presents from friends and family, the greatest gift I received over the weekend was given not only to me, but to the world at large. Very early on Friday morning, hip hop stars El-P and Killer Mike unleashed their second album as Run the Jewels. It was supposed to be out on Tuesday, but I guess they couldn’t wait any longer. That’s understandable, especially once you hear the record. It’s a 100% free download by the way, and is available at runthejewels.net for the cost of your email address. I’ve been listening to Run the Jewels 2 all weekend, and can honestly say it’s not only the best hip hop record released so far this year, but one of the best records overall from 2014 so far. That’s not a claim I throw around lightly. The beats hit harder and the lyrics are wilder than the last album too. I doubt that I’ll be able to do a full writeup about it, especially since I haven’t published a proper album review in a few months (sorry about that by the way, there’s a lengthy explanation as to why), so please just take my recommendation and download the record. Over the course of these last eight years, something has been missing from the musical landscape. That specific something is Sleater-Kinney, who broke up in 2006 after 12 years of playing together as a band. Corin Tucker went on to release two solo albums. Carrie Brownstein gained notoriety thanks to her team-up with Fred Armisen for Portlandia. And Janet Weiss played drums with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, among other bands. Back in 2011, Brownstein and Weiss also teamed up with Mary Timony to form Wild Flag. They released one pretty strong album, and then made the decision at the end of last year to break up. shortly after I heard about Wild Flag’s breakup, I read an interview with Brownstein where she implied that playing in a band and playing live shows took a serious mental toll on her over the years, to the point where she wasn’t sure she ever wanted to return to that medium. Given that she’s an incredible guitarist and all-around musician, hearing that made me sad, and got me worried that Sleater-Kinney would probably never reunite. Thankfully I was wrong, and not only are Sleater-Kinney back together, but they’ve got a new album called No Cities to Love that will be out on January 20th. You can stream the first single “Bury Our Friends” right now, or even download it for free if you’re willing to give up your email address. But wait! There’s more! Not only are they reuniting and not only are they putting out a new album, but they’ll also be heading out on tour. Check their official website for details on that. I saw Sleater-Kinney perform live once back in 2005, and honestly it was one of the most exciting and memorable concerts I’ve attended in the last 10 years. They’re a force to be reckoned with, and the world is a much better place with these three musicians working together. Now then, let’s get to the mid-week edition of Pick Your Poison. If you ask me, and by virtue of reading this website you telepathically did, there are certain types and styles of music that are suited to each of the four seasons each year. Spring is a time for beauty, as the weather starts to warm and the flowers begin to bloom. That’s best evoked with acoustic guitars and sweeping post-rock. Summer is hot and filled with fun in the sun, so you want high energy songs from the pop genre, be it indie, mainstream, synth or other. EDM and hip hop are pretty much summer genres too. Winter is great for just about anything minimalist in sound, that speaks to the gentle but harsh conditions outside. As for fall, that’s a season of quiet reflection as that which was once blooming is now dying, and the year is quickly coming to an end. You’re going to want some great folk and psychedelic tunes to help soundtrack that. While I’m unable to completely steer every edition of Pick Your Poison in any particular seasonal direction, especially since individual tastes often override any seasonal influences, I try to do what I can to help sway things from time to time. Often that means recommending shows I think you’ll like. This upcoming Thursday the 16th, psych-pop upstarts Temples will be playing a show at the Park West in Chicago. They made waves earlier this year with the release of their debut album Sun Structures, which is fun and trippy and sounds like a glorious car crash between Tame Impala and MGMT. There’s a lot to love about these guys, and they’ve certainly worked their way up to headliner status. Just a couple of months ago, their early afternoon set was the first thing I saw at Lollapalooza 2014, and it made for a solid start to the weekend. I can vouch for their live chops, even if they seemed a little overheated due to the weather outside. It was also my assessment that they’d be far more comfortable and effective indoors, where climate control and suitable darkness could allow their psychedelic influences would have a far greater presence. In other words, Park West is a great spot for them. Take a listen to tracks like “Shelter Song” and “Mesmerise” to get a better idea of who these guys are and what they’re all about, in case you didn’t know already. If you’re in Chicago without any plans on Thursday night, by all means come out to the show as well. It starts at 8pm. Tickets are only $20 and can be purchased here. Hope to see you there for another great fall show that’s truly appropriate for the season. Now how about that Pick Your Poison for your Columbus Day? As far as I can tell, Iceland is a pretty amazing country. I’ve never been, but some friends of mine have gone and raved about it. The photos and videos I’ve seen also make it look visually striking, with panoramic vistas, natural hot springs and a high visibility rate for the Northern Lights. It’s no wonder then that so much great and beautiful music comes out of the country. Arguably the two most prominent artists from Iceland that support this assertion are Bjork and Sigur Ros. They’ve sustained epic global popularity, and in the case of Sigur Ros, without even singing in a widespread language such as English. Of course there’s plenty more music where that came from, and one name that’s been making serious waves in the last year or two has been Ásgeir. His full name is Ásgeir Trausti Einarsson, but trust me when I say it’s so much better and easier to only have to deal with the first part of that. Even then, the pronunciation is a little tricky, as phonetically it’s “owse-gear.” He released his debut album Dýrð í dauðaþögn back in 2012, and it became the fastest selling debut album in the history of Iceland. At the start of 2014, he re-recorded the album with everything translated into English, including the album title In the Silence. That’s been gaining a lot of traction worldwide as well, at one point reaching #1 on Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart. His combination of gentle acoustic folk melodies and that gorgeous falsetto of a voice just hits you right at your emotional core no matter how hard you try to avoid it. His biggest single to date has been “King and Cross,” which I’ve heard more than a few times on the radio these last few months. Check out “Lupin Intrigue” as well if you’re looking for a deeper cut. Anyways, the reason I’m bringing all of this up is because Ásgeir is in the middle of a U.S. tour right now, and will be at Lincoln Hall this Sunday night for a show. It starts at 8pm, it’s 18+ and tickets are only $14. You can buy them in advance here. Ásgeir’s music is sort of built for the fall season, and getting the chance to see him during that time should be something really special, so I hope you’ll come out if you’re in Chicago! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been relatively disappointed with the hip hop offerings so far in 2014. I mean, outside of records from Shabazz Palaces and Future, I can’t think of a single other hip hop release this year that’s gotten me genuinely excited. There’s been plenty of stuff on the “fringes” of the genre that have been great, and records from Flying Lotus and FKA twigs probably fall into that category. But I’m thinking that unless Kanye West or Kendrick Lamar get their records finished and out before the end of the year, that there’s not going to be much else noteworthy from the rap world to enjoy. I will say this much though – I stumbled upon the new K.Flay record not too long ago, and walked away impressed. She’s been making music for 10 years now, starting during her time at Stanford University when she released her first mixtape. Things have only built up from there, and she even signed to RCA Records, which put out her last EP What If It Is last year. Yet as an indie hip hop artist she’s always preferred to do things her own way, which is why earlier this year she decided to forego a traditional label and crowdfund her debut album instead. Life As A Dog is the result, and it came out this past summer to solid reviews and charted decently as well. I think what I like most about the record is just how completely alien it feels to the hip hop genre. The beats and rhymes are there, but they don’t really sound like anything else out there right now. In many ways, she’s blurring the lines between hip hop and indie rock with her liberal use of a full band. K.Flay has proven herself to be a truly unique voice for the type of music she’s making, and there’s nothing wrong with that, no matter what the haters might try and say. Consider her like a cross between Purity Ring, Grimes and Lorde, but with a lot of rapping thrown in. Maybe it’s easiest if you just give her new album a listen, which is currently streaming on Soundcloud. Anyways, I’ve been talking about K.Flay here because she’s coming back for an all-ages hometown show in Chicago (where she was born and raised) next Monday, October 13th. She’s performing at Schubas with her band, and all indications are it should be a blast. She prefers to mix things up a bit and throw some curveballs into her live arrangements vs. how they sound on record, which will definitely keep things interesting and fun.
