This Week in Music: 8-21-15

Every Friday, instead of sharing downloads and Soundcloud streams, we take a quick look back at the many other music-related things that happened this week in a segment that’s appropriately called “This Week in Music.” If there was a great or noteworthy music video that was released, it’ll be featured here. If an artist gave a particularly noteworthy interview, that might pop up in the links below. The same goes for interesting articles related to music, documentaries about bands, and just generally whatever might strike my fancy. If you’ve got something fun or important related to an artist that you think should be mentioned here, shoot me an email! All the information you need is in the sidebar on the right. So here’s this week’s wrap-up. Click the links below, and you’ll be off!

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 8-19-15

Morrissey is a character. I don’t mean that in the sense of how actors portray characters, but more in terms of “a person with a big personality”. He’s consistently given attention less for the music he makes and more for the things he says and does. In the last few years he has kicked opening acts off of his tours for little to no reason, has cancelled many tour dates (eventually citing cancer as his reason for doing so), was dropped by his record label, and a whole host of other things. The man’s a magnet for drama, or at the very least manufactures it himself when there’s none to be found. The reason I bring all this up is because for the first time in nearly a decade Moz sat down in front of a camera for an in-depth interview with Larry King. Lots of topics are covered, including many of his more recent controversial moments, making it definitely worth a watch. You can catch the whole thing right here. Once you’re done with that, enjoy these Pick Your Poison tracks. Notable downloads in this set come from Clones of Clones, Grounders, Stevie B Wolf and Whiskerman. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Diet Cig, Gun Outfit, Jackal, James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg (ironically enough, covering The Smiths), Julien Baker, Madeaux, Sui Zhen and Young Empires, among others.

Pick Your Poison: Thursday 8-13-15

If you’re free at all this weekend and are looking for something fun to do, a trip to the movies might be just what the doctor ordered. Sure, you’ve probably been to see a few big summer blockbusters over the last couple of months, but if you’re aching for some air conditioning for a couple of hours, I’d like to throw a recommendation that you don’t miss Straight Outta Compton if it’s playing in your area. The film tells the story of seminal late ’80s/early ’90s hip hop collective N.W.A., who rose to prominence at an important time for race relations in the U.S. It’s got plenty of drama as well as music, which is why I’m bringing it up. Reviews have been very good, so whether you like the music or not there’s definitely a compelling story to be told. Now then, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. Recommended mp3s in this set come from Falling Awake, Noer the Boy, The Persian Leaps and Tree Machines. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from All Dogs, helen, Janelle Monae & The Wondaland, King Khan, Kisses, Raw Fabrics, Timmy’s Organism and Wax Motif.

If you’re a fan of the infinite wonder that is outer space, and who among us isn’t, make sure you get outside for a bit this evening as the Perseid Meteor Shower will be in full effect. If the skies are clear over your neck of the woods, there should be a dazzling show taking place as meteors streak across the vast expanse. Because it also happens to be a new moon, things should be brighter and more active than they have been the last several years. Find the darkest open area in your neighborhood, spread out on the ground and take it all in. Once you’re done with that, check out today’s Pick Your Poison, which features tracks from Babes, Chance the Rapper & Noname Gypsy, Jacuzzi Boys and Thayer Sarrano.
