Pick Your Poison: Monday 6-30-14

As you’re hopefully well aware, The New Pornographers will be back with a new album this fall for all of us to listen to and enjoy. Their particular brand of bouncy, group-crafted indie pop has become something of a rarity these days, as I’m hard pressed to think of many bands in their sphere of similarity (though The Polyphonic Spree are kind of in the same arena). I’m not seeing a lot of press releases namedropping The New Pornos as either an influence or a “sounds like” reference. You could call it a testament to their unique ability to craft fun sing-alongs. Well, if you’re looking for more of that in your life, or maybe are just hoping to fill the gap while we wait for that new album, allow me to recommend the band Ages and Ages. The six piece from Portland released their second album Divisionary this past spring, and it’s packed with big hooks and hopeful messages. As the band was developing the record, there were a number of personal tragedies that occurred, so the aim was to craft songs that provided strength in tough times. That’s clearly evident by the supremely addictive gospel-inspired title track (and album closer) “Divisionary (Do the Right Thing),” which I’d wager is a strong contender for Song of the Year (so far). That alone is worth checking out, even if you don’t give the full album a try. It also sets the stage for Ages and Ages’ live show, because you just know that there’s going to be a full crowd sing-along complete with rhythmic clapping and maybe even some harmonizing. I’m excited to experience it when the band comes to Chicago for a show at Schubas on Wednesday, July 16th. It’s a 21+ show, starts at 9 pm, and tickets are $12. Come on out and have some mid-week summer fun! Okay, let’s get into this Monday edition of Pick Your Poison, which is also a bit of summer fun. Great tracks in this set come from The Amends, Casey Jack, Elephant Stone, Grimes, Niagara and Shy Boys. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Cloud Boat, Freddie Gibbs, Young Thug & A$AP Ferg, Imogen Heap, Painted Zeros and more.

Casey Jack – Not In Love With The Modern World

Grimes – Go (ft. Blood Diamonds)

Hemmit – 15 Minutes

Jason Maek & Zaena – Bass Come Around

Lusine – Two Dots (Chad Valley’s Turks & Caicos Edit)

My Dry Wet Mess – Eyelids’ Secrets (Ikonika Shy Remix)

Album Review: Owen Pallett – In Conflict [Domino/Secret City]

A fair number of people have absolutely no idea who Owen Pallett is, even though they’ve likely heard his music in one place or another. His primary claim to fame has been as a composer/unofficial member of Arcade Fire, most recently earning an Oscar nomination for his work with the band on the soundtrack to the 2013 film Her. Most, if not all of the band’s string arrangements come directly from his brain. He’s composed for other bands on occasion as well, including Beirut, Grizzly Bear and The Mountain Goats, the latter of which was a lyrical inspiration for his new solo record In Conflict. After releasing solo material in the mid-00’s under the Final Fantasy moniker (which he was forced to change due to a lawsuit with video game creators Square Enix), in 2010 Pallett put out Heartland under his own name. Like everything he had done up until that point, Heartland was a concept record, telling the story of Lewis from a fictional realm called Spectrum, who faces off in a battle with his God (named “Owen Pallett”). It was a rich and engrossing album that practically demanded to be heard in full in one sitting, each thread connected and lightly pulling on the one before.

In Conflict is similar in that it too is best digested all at once; however conceptually speaking there is no singular narrative or storyline to follow. There are themes though, and many of the songs deal with self-doubt, depression, loneliness and the challenges of connecting with others. These are things we all face from time to time, though some of us deal with it a lot more than others. There seems to be a lot greater resonance the older you are too, as friends slowly disappear into their marriages and families, what’s a thirty or forty-something single person with no children to do? In the opener “I Am Not Afraid,” Pallett appears to have come to some sort of a resolution about his life. “I’m not at all afraid of changing / but I don’t know what good it would do me / I am no longer afraid / The truth doesn’t terrify us, terrify us / My salvation is found in discipline,” he sings with confidence.

Yet as quickly as he finds direction, he loses it once more. “On A Path” is about losing your place or outgrowing your hometown and the subsequent wanderlust as you search for a new place to settle. Mental illness and the “It Gets Better” Project are the focus of “The Secret Seven,” inspired in part by the suicide of gay violin student Tyler Clementi. Pallett seeks to relate his own experience with mental illness as a teen as well as those of his friends in the hopes of helping others dealing with the same issues. He even gives out his phone number at the end of the song so those in despair can call him to talk if need be. Later in the record “The Sky Behind the Flag” deals with the desire to control every aspect of our lives and exert that same influence on the world at large. The idea is that such micromanagement can only end in destruction and implosion, as others as well as the universe do not like being ruled by an iron fist. Above all else however, “The Riverbed” probably best represents the album’s overall themes. The subject matter on that track ranges from writer’s block to depression to alcoholism to growing older without children, which is basically a nasty cocktail of anxiety and dread. Dark as it may get, the final verse seeks to provide some degree of solace, particularly with the line, “Try to admit that you might have it wrong.” In other words, though you may be haunted by your failures, perhaps everyone else considers you a success.

Such is the point of a record titled In Conflict, as our mental states often clash with one another in obtuse ways. That idea also comes through from the instrumental side of things, supported in no small part by the master of the oblique, Brian Eno. While Pallett does an incredible job with string/orchestral arrangements and there are plenty of them on this album, he’s also chosen to expand his sound to incorporate more electronic elements. He’s done a fair amount in that area before, but never to such an extent. Pretty much every song has at least a touch of violin in it, but there’s also a wealth of digital effects like beats and bleeps, often accompanied by some sort of synth or Mellotron as they work well together. Those sorts of moments are particularly evident on “The Passion,” “Infernal Fantasy,” the title track and a couple others. It’s easy to say that this is where Eno’s influence bleeds through the most, as the non-symphonic, non-guitar areas are almost always his specialty. The only disappointing thing about it will likely be how some of these songs come across when performed on stage. There’s a certain excitement that comes with watching Pallett build sonic landscapes through his unique looping techniques, and electronic/synth stuff pulls him out of that world, however temporarily.

As a whole, In Conflict represents yet another masterstroke from Pallett, who has increasingly proven to be one of the top composers making music today. The lack of any official conceptual elements connecting all of the songs through characters or ideas relieves us from the distraction of trying to analyze and dig out some sort of storyline so we can focus on what’s really being done and said on the individual tracks. Every moment is fascinating in one way or another, be it a delicate instrumental composition or a single word/phrase. Whether or not they are influenced by or autobiographical to the man behind them is certainly up for debate, but what’s not is their intention to provoke a response from the listener. Hidden beneath the themes of fear, anger, depression and anxiety is the message that everyone has their own path, and the choices you make, no matter how good or bad, are an attempt to do what’s best for yourself. Thankfully, this record allows Pallett to give us the best of his conflicted, brilliant self as well.

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 6-25-14

Every now and then, I’ll write a Pick Your Poison intro that gets into sports. This isn’t a sports site, nor am I that heavy of a sports fan, at least in relation to most other people I know, but sometimes it’s fun to get together with a bunch of friends and strangers to bond over a big event. Seeing as how we’re in what might best be described as the doldrums of summer, in which the only sport to really watch is baseball, and even then you’re probably not very invested if your team isn’t doing well, it’s been interesting to watch the U.S. quickly grasp onto the World Cup for salvation from boredom. Historically speaking, soccer (aka futbol) has never been big in America, despite it’s massive reputation everywhere else around the world. There are countries that shut down almost entirely during their team’s World Cup matches so everyone can watch. Here in the U.S., nothing officially shuts down, but this year it seems like people are ducking out of work, or at least finding a way to watch while at work. Massive gatherings are held in Chicago and New York and other major cities, where more than 20,000 people show up in full gear at a public location where a big screen has been set up. Bars are packed, to the point where the place I regularly visit down the street had no tables available this past Sunday afternoon – typically a bit of a dead time. It’s kind of exciting, and the best part is that it does more uniting than it does dividing. The World Cup is the only real sporting competition that takes place on a global scale, so instead of cheering for your city you’re cheering for your country. Of course the U.S. is also a melting pot with immigrants from all over, so you’re going to have a bit of separation there, but for the most part it seems to be a good thing. We kind of need it right now. I haven’t played soccer in probably 20 years, and don’t even remember all of the rules, but am really enjoying this so far. Let’s hope Team USA does well enough in tomorrow’s battle vs. Germany to make it to the next round. Our team has never been good enough to go all the way, but doing reasonably well would be nice, and would keep us invested for just a bit longer. Okay, I’ve said my piece. Now let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. Some great stuff in this set from Baliff, Basketball Shorts, City Walls Autumn Falls, Penguin Prison and Yolanda Be Cool. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new cuts from Bag Raiders, Hiss Golden Messenger, School of Seven Bells, She Keeps Bees, Stargroves and Sun Angels.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 6-23-14

Class of 2014 update! It’s been a short while since I’ve done one of these, so let’s take a look at how some of the 10 artists that are part of this year’s class are doing. Why not start with the biggest success story of them all, Mr. Sam Smith of course. His record In the Lonely Hour came out last week, and while it’s too early to tell what the sales figures are like, early estimates are looking great. His latest single “Stay With Me” is burning a hole through radios around the world, and some are calling him the male version of Adele. Here’s 27 Reasons Sam Smith Is The Angelic Voice The World Needs Right Now. Additionally, there’s been some great interviews with Smith to promote the record, including one that discusses his sexual orientation. Oh yeah, and then there was the time he covered Whitney Houston for a SiriusXM session. Pretty great. As far as FKA twigs goes, since my last report she’s announced her debut full length will be titled LP1 and has set a release date of August 12th. Ellie Goulding premiered a new single called “Two Weeks” on BBC Radio 1 the other day, and you can hear the new track here, just skip to the 30 minute mark. This September, Banks will be releasing her debut album Goddess, which I mentioned in my last Class of 2014 update. What’s new since then is that she’s released another song/video from the record called “Drowning.” So definitely watch that if you haven’t done so already. She’s also announced a fall U.S. tour in support of the album, including a stop in Chicago at Metro on October 7th. Tickets are on sale now. Speaking of tours, SAINT PEPSI is out on one with Painted Palms right now, and will in fact be stopping by the Empty Bottle in Chicago this Friday. Tickets are $10 in advance, so get on that. And while he released the Gin City EP back in February, earlier this month he did a pretty great remix of the TEEN track “Not For Long” that’s worth listening to. So that’s about all the updates I’ve got for you at the moment. In less than a month, it’s going to be like a Class of 2014 convention out at the Pitchfork Music Festival, with sets from FKA twigs, Kelela, Mas Ysa and Perfect Pussy. Needless to say, I’ll be covering that and am tremendously excited about it. Maybe I’ll even get lucky and some interviews will take place. More on all of that as it develops. Meanwhile, here’s today’s edition of Pick Your Poison, hot off the presses for you. Great tracks today come from Anamanaguchi, Brooklynn, The Holy Coast, Moska, and Oh, Be Clever. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from Crater, Gold-Bears, Slow Magic, Snakeships, White Lung and Zola Jesus.

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 6-18-14

I’ve been following Casey Dienel’s career since she first started making music under her own name back in 2006. Her debut Wind-Up Canary caught the ears of a lot of people, probably because she was lumped in with a couple other “quirky pop” piano-bound prodigies at the time, most notably Regina Spektor and Nellie McKay. In the 8 years since then, Dienel has certainly pivoted in a direction that separates her from that collective. It started in 2008 when she signed to Dead Oceans and adopted the stage name of White Hinterland. She assembled a backing band and began to move in some interesting and more experimental directions with her sound. Not everything worked, and though she’s gone through some rough patches, she’s remained resilient and continues to persevere these days. Her most recent record Baby came out this spring, and may be her most ambitious to date. Never content to do the same thing over and over again, Dienel has decided that the dream pop elements on 2010’s Kairos should be replaced with orchestral flourishes, horns and off-kilter percussion instead. It’s a bold and interesting move from a consistently bold and interesting singer-songwriter. A single like “Ring the Bell” provides a good entry point into the headspace of the record in general, which can often feel like a cross between Bjork, Zola Jesus and tUnE-yArDs, particularly with the vocals. Actually like tUnE-yArDs, White Hinterland has also attracted a fair amount of attention for using looping to construct most of her songs in a live setting. If you’ve never seen that done before from someone like Andrew Bird, Owen Pallett or the aforementioned tUnE-yArDs, then you’re missing out on something truly special and incredible. The whole process of building a song with various looped pieces and harmonizing with yourself is immensely gripping to watch and even more incredible when it’s done successfully. What I’m trying to say is, if you have the chance to see White Hinterland perform live, you should. It just so happens that she will be playing a show in Chicago this upcoming Monday, June 23rd at the Empty Bottle, and I’d like to encourage you to join me if you’ll be in town. It’s Do312’s 4th Birthday Bash, and as a result it’s 100% free to attend provided you RSVP beforehand. Of course admittance is also based on capacity, so if the place is full you might not get in. But show up right at 9 PM for sets from Touched By Ghoul and Benjamin Booker, and I believe there will also be free alcoholic beverages as well. The whole thing is going to be tons of fun, with a hopefully mindblowing set from White Hinterland to cap it all off. So I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the show, and honestly it’s going to be a great way to close out your Monday night. Now then, let’s get to the mid-week edition of Pick Your Poison. Good tracks today coming from Buddy, EVVY, Islands, Music Go Music, Oknai and Scotty ATL. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Cloud Boat (covering The Smiths), Ganglion Reef, Herbert, Julia Holter (covering Dionne Warwick), White Fence and Wildcat! Wildcat!

Pick Your Poison: Monday 6-16-14

On occasion I’ve felt it necessary to mention in one of these Pick Your Poison intros the challenges that female pop stars and musicians face because of their gender. Being a non-musician male, I can’t fully relate to anything that these women have to deal with, however I feel the need to bring it up in an effort to encourage understanding and potentially create change. If you’re being harassed by people online who feel that the anonymity of the internet gives them the right to say anything they want, including making crude and sexually explicit comments to women, that is absolutely not okay. While I’m sure that Sky Ferreira has to deal with a whole lot of that online via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and such, one of the stranger moments happened late last week when she appeared on a Brazilian TV show called “The Noite.” Host and comedian Danilo Gentili may not speak English very well, but I doubt that some of his questions to Ferreira through a translator were misinterpreted. He asked about the nudity on her album cover and whether people love her for her music or her body. And while Ferreira was a sport about it, things only got more awkward from there going into her history with Michael Jackson, a discussion about a “festival of crack” (notable because of her drug bust last fall) and her early days of singing opera. If you’d like to see the whole messy few minutes of it, here’s the full video. It’s easy to blame the situation on cultural differences and even Ferreira’s occasional awkwardness, but there’s a certain crudeness that sort of permeates through those excuses. I’ve been told by some Brazilians that this particular talk show she went on is notorious for this sort of disrespect, and that avoiding it would have been wise. It’s just discouraging that something like this exists at all, though considering they also have a festival of crack, maybe there are worse problems out there to deal with. Okay then, let’s get to today’s Pick Your Poison. There’s some great tracks in this set from Conveyor, Dorothy, Feather Beds, Sea Wolf, Sticky Fingers and The Verve Pipe. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Busdriver (ft. Aesop Rock and Danny Brown), Jessie Ware, Mutual Benefit, The Proper Ornaments, Total Control and Warpaint (covering Duran Duran).

Pick Your Poison: Wednesday 6-11-14

This weekend is the annual Chicago tradition known as Blues Fest. Considering the city is widely considered to be one of the “birthplaces” of the blues, it’s an important couple of days mixed with all sorts of rich history and performances by some true legends of the craft. My sincere hope is that you get out to Grant Park sometime on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to see at least some of the acts performing. It’s a pretty fun time, and totally free to attend as well. Should you be looking for a good show elsewhere in the city to help compliment Blues Fest, allow me to recommend Curtis Harding, who will be at Schubas on Saturday night. Blues and soul are close cousins in a thematic and sonic sense (they are NOT the same thing, nor should you confuse one with the other…please don’t write me angry letters), or at the very least there’s a fair amount of crossover in audiences. Harding makes soul music, to the point where his debut album is called Soul Power. It’s the sort of stuff that pulls from a deep well of emotion and life experience, making it not just music for specific tastes, but really for everybody. And while the blues tends to wallow in pain and sadness, soul music can be a little more upbeat and uplifting at times. As evidenced by the video for his song “Keep On Shining,” Harding has a pretty good sense of humor about him too. His live show should be at least partly a fun party, and one hopes the crowd would also do a bit of dancing. Intrigued? Come check out the show. It’s 21+, starts at 7:30, and tickets are only $12. You can buy them in advance here. Just a little something else to distract yourself with on what looks to ba a packed weekend of fun in and around the Chicagoland area. The weather should hold up nicely too. Now then, let’s get on with today’s Pick Your Poison. Some great tracks today from Baby Baby, Cloud Seeding, Emily Danger, St. Tropez and Yucca. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream new songs from Allah-Las, Evan Mellows, Madlib, Slaptop and Spider Bags. Class of 2014 artist SAINT PEPSI also does a great remix of a Painted Palms track (they’re on tour together), and Mickey Valen did some nice work turning Say Lou Lou’s “Everything We Touch” inside out.

Pick Your Poison: Monday 6-9-14

I know we’ve just gotten past the weekend, but Chicago readers, do you have plans for Saturday night (June 14th)? We’re still at the start of summer festival season, and there are street fests and all sorts of other nonsense going on, but if you’re looking to hear some great music that truly reflects the sunny, warm weather, might I recommend the L.A.-based band Allah-Las? They’ll have a new record out later this summer, but their self-titled debut is filled with the sort of hooks and jangly pop that put you in an outdoor fun sort of mood. At the start of this year they released a 7″ single featuring two of their strongest songs yet, “Had It All” and “Every Girl.” If you listen to those tracks, expect them to get stuck in your head for days. Anyways, the Allah-Las are on tour right now, and if you’ll be bumming around Chicago with nothing to do, maybe head over to the Empty Bottle to check them out. It’s a 21+ show, starts at 9:30, and tickets are only $10 in advance. Pick one up here should you be so inclined. Should be a really fun time. In the here and now, there’s the Monday edition of Pick Your Poison to get to. Allow me to recommend tracks in this set from Beat Connection, Dumplings en China, Joe Marson, The Pharmacy, Prince of Assyria, Savage Sister and Unicycle Loves You. In the Soundcloud section after the jump, stream songs from City States, Michael Flynn, The Rentals, SBTRKT, Street Eaters and Wild Cub (covering Drake).

Beat Connection – Silver Screen (Slight Return)

Dumplings en China – Zebra Cakes

Get Inuit – Cutie Pie, I’m Bloated

Joe Marson – Love You Safely

New God – Firework

The Pharmacy – Masten Lake Lagoon

Pink Blue Oak – It’s Like These Times

Prince of Assyria – At the Gates of Central Bank

Rayvon Owen – Rescue

Savage Sister – Huge Moves

Unicycle Loves You – The Dead Age

We Are the Brave – Sparrow (ATTAR! Remix)
